Interstellar Survival: Invasion

Chapter 243: Flying Beast

Chapter 243: Flying Beast

The loud thump came from something knocking against our morph-capable shield. Painful wails of the flying beast followed the sound. The second thump came, followed by the third, and more.

"Everyone apart from Sarje will leave the shelter. Prepare for combat," I ordered. It was no longer safe to keep hiding under the black tarp.

With my order, Zhang Bao'er, Anxashe, Old Du, and the Wargod soldiers crawled out from under the tarp. Seeing that everyone was in position, I also crawled out behind them.

Above us, five flying beasts with four claws could be seen spiraling in the air. To the side of us, a flying beast with an injured wing was sprawled on the ground. It was whining painfully. These flying beasts had four sets of claws and incredibly sharp fangs. With their massive wings, they stayed in the air. One of them was making a loud shrieking sound in the direction of a distant building.

"What beasts are these?" I asked Temo, who was looking out from under the tarp.

"Four-legged winged beast. They are the beast army's scouts and shock troops. They have sensitive hearing and are extremely savage, making it impossible for them to be tamed. They are also unwilling to communicate with different species, so I won't be able to understand them either," said Temo.

"That flying beast is calling in the direction of that building. Is it calling for reinforcements?" asked Zhang Bao'er.

"It's notifying the buers. If the buers get here, it will be very troublesome," said Temo.

"Buers? What kind of beast are they?" asked Zhang Bao'er curiously.

"They're extremely terrifying. It is better for us to not meet them at all. Hurry up and kill these scouts before more beasts arrive," said Temo.

"Long-range weapons out, everyone. Fire at will. Do not bother saving ammunition or keeping any of them alive," I ordered.

The moment the order was given, bullets, beams, arrows, and even daggers flew into the sky. These flying beasts had clearly not participated in any battles before. They were unaware of the prowess of long-range weapons, and four were immediately struck. They dropped from the sky.

The final beast was the same one calling out in the direction of the building. It seemed stupefied by what had happened to its companions, and it hurriedly flapped its wings to escape in the direction of the base.

The beast moved extremely fast. In a short time, it pulled far away from us. Our laser guns weren't precise enough at this distance, so we weren't able to strike it down. During the critical moment, Anxashe, who was standing beside me, drew an arrow, aimed it at the fleeing beast, and unleashed a powerful arrow.

The arrow shot forth with a boom as it moved at supersonic speed. In less than three seconds, the supersonic arrow caught up with the flying beast and pierced through its body. Right before our eyes, the beast dropped from the sky.

"Nice shot, Anxashe. How did you make your arrow break the sound barrier using only physical strength?" asked Old Du, with respect in his voice.

"I have an assist system installed on my bow. Of course, intense training is still required to release an arrow like that," replied Anxashe.

At this point, all the flying beasts had been shot down from the sky. But other beasts at the distant building seemed to have noticed the commotion near us. About a dozen flying beasts were flying in our direction.

"Shit! Canyue, more flying beasts are coming," said Zhang Bao'er.

Apart from the dead flying beasts, there was also a flying beast that had broken its wing and was ramming into our shield. It was struggling against death on the ground.

"Fatty, go deal with the dying beast. Arrow guy, give me your bow and arrow. Everyone else, drag these corpses under the tarp. Move out immediately," ordered Temo, displaying the calm and temperament of someone from a star-level civilization.

We didn't understand what he was trying to do, but his words held weight coming from a member of a star-level civilization. Everyone moved according to his orders. Zhang Bao'er and Anxashe worked together to end the struggling flying beast while the Wargod soldiers dragged the beast corpses under the tarp.

At that time, I noticed with astonishment that the blood flowing out of the corpses actually evaporated into nothingness the moment it came out. No trace of blood was left on the ground.

The flying beasts continued flying toward us. Old Du and I were the last ones to go under the tarp after adjusting our system of using a shield and scopes above the tarp. It was extremely cramped under the tarp. The corpses emanated an odd smell, and I could see that the others were trying hard not to vomit from the smell.

As a precaution, I lay down at the edge of the shelter and observed what Temo was doing outside. The fellow had set the bow to stand on the ground. It was probably due to the weight of the bow, forcing the fellow to use his body and the ground to keep the bow standing.

'What is that fellow doing? Has he gone crazy?' I wondered.

Soon, the new group of beasts reached our location. Temo was able to attract their attention by standing straight out in the open. Before long, over a dozen flying beasts were in the sky, swirling above Temo.

At that time, the one corpse we hadn't dragged under the tarp, the beast Anxashe had shot down, was finally discovered. One of the flying beasts lifted the corpse before flying over and tossing the corpse beside Temo. Seeing a dead companion, the flying beasts in the air shrieked angrily. Their voices were ear-piercing and unpleasant to hear.

A few minutes later, a comparatively larger flying beast flew out of the group and slowly descended in front of Temo. At that moment, the shrieks in the sky stopped. The atmosphere turned solemn. I was so nervous it felt like my heart was going to pop out of my body. To be safe, I aimed my muzzle at the head of the beast approaching Temo.

'The moment it attacks, I'll shoot it down. At worst, we'll have to fight these beasts,' I thought to myself.

Temo seemed surprisingly calm. As a member of a star-level civilization, he displayed far more grace than Domo, a member of the Jido race. The large flying beast had a row of fangs that looked like steel. The beast slowly approached Temo, its massive body forming a big contrast with Temo's small figure. In fact, it looked like the beast could swallow Temo in one bite if it wanted.

The flying beast probably didn't see Temo as a threat due to his size. Thus, it lowered its head as it studied Temo. It had not attacked immediately. Suddenly, Temo performed a shocking action. He pushed the bow aside and exerted all his strength to raise his arrow and stab the corpse of the flying beast beside him.

I noted that the arrow had been stabbed right into the same spot Anxashe's arrow had gone through. The flying beasts in the air shrieked furiously, looking ready to dive down and tear Temo into pieces.

However, the big beast before Temo shrieked loudly, instantly silencing the beasts in the air. The beast moved the corpse on the ground for a bit with its claws before lifting the arrow with its mouth. It gave Temo one last look before flapping its wings and soaring into the sky. It returned to the building, and when the other beasts saw it leave, they could only obediently follow suit despite their fury. After the flying beasts left, I rushed out of the shelter and ran toward Temo.

"Temo, that's amazing! How did you do that? Why did they leave?" I asked, gratitude filling my heart.

"This is an agreement between superior civilizations. People of inferior civilization won't understand," said Temo, becoming cocky yet again.

"Keep talking about superior and inferior civilizations, and I'll let you have a taste of my fist. You can see if my fist is superior or inferior then," said Zhang Bao'er.

"Bao'er, Temo just saved all of us. Don't be rude," I said.

"Canyue, this fellow is too much of a racist. I must teach him a lesson, or he'll turn into a second Domo soon," said Zhang Bao'er righteously.

"That Domo is the Jido peasant you mentioned? Is there really such a person? Apart from your sorry group, how many of your people actually have the guts to attack this planet?" asked Temo suspiciously.

"It will be too shocking for you if you know the answer. However, this is the military secret of our superior civilization, so we can't tell you," said Zhang Bao'er, taking the chance to let Temo have a taste of his own medicine.

"Honorable Temo, how did you drive all those beasts away alone? Can you enlighten me?" asked Dodo respectfully.

Zhang Bao'er's threat seemed to have worked. Temo did not make any remarks about inferior and superior civilizations. Instead, he answered, "This was the result of a rule in the interstellar hunting game."
