Merry Christmas
................................
By the time everyone returned to the Harvelle's Roadhouse, it was already morning.
Although the sun was shining brightly outside, the inside of the tavern was dark and gloomy. Ellen and Jo had not rested, as they couldn't sleep, constantly worrying about Alex and the others battling the apocalypse.
It was only when Alex returned with Dean, Sam, and the others that the mother and daughter finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh, boys."
Ellen quickly walked over and embraced Dean and Sam. After all this time of interacting with them, Ellen had long considered the brothers as her own children.
"We've solved it. Everything is taken care of. Lucifer, Michael—they won't threaten us again," Dean said with a smile.
"Really?" This was probably the best news Ellen had heard in years.
"Yes, but the battle isn't over yet. With Lucifer and Michael gone, both Heaven and Hell will fall into a massive power struggle. While it won't affect us immediately, we still have to stay alert," Sam said.
Upon hearing this, the look of joy on Ellen's face turned a bit more serious.
However, she also knew that once they walked the path of hunting demons, there would be no turning back. As Dean had said, hunting demons wasn't just a job, it was a way of life.
From now on, they would never have a day off, until they met their end in battle. Meanwhile, Jo came over to Alex, worried. She looked him up and down, even reaching out to check if he had been hurt.
"Don't worry, I'm fine. The dirty work was all done by Dean and Sam. I just spent some time watching a play with another Archangel who's also playing games with the world," Alex shrugged.
"That's good. I can't even imagine what you guys had to face," Jo said, patting her chest, her brows furrowed. "Do you know how worried I've been while staying here?"
"But the result is still pretty good, isn't it?" Alex smiled, ruffling her hair.
Feeling Alex's hand, Jo gently lifted her head. When she saw his smile, a sudden emptiness filled her heart.
She recognized that smile—it was identical to the one her father had every time he left.
"You're leaving, aren't you?"
Jo's voice softened.
"Yeah."
Alex responded softly, his voice filled with a sense of inevitability.
He had already spent too much time here, but for him, the gains were immense. He had consumed demons here before, and now he had consumed angels—two of the most powerful angels, no less.
These unique energies had given Alex new ways to control his magic. His astral projection had reached an extraordinary level.
Now, Alex could enter anyone's dreams at will, even causing harm to their bodies and minds while they slept.
Overall, Alex had gotten what he wanted. But for Jo, it felt like she was losing something.
The atmosphere grew quiet. Dean, Sam, and Ellen noticed the heavy mood around Alex but chose not to break it, understanding it without saying a word.
After some time, Jo finally spoke softly.
"Will it be two years until you come back again?"
"I can't say for sure, Jo."
In fact, Alex had already set a time anchor with Miss Minutes, and from this moment on, the flow of time in this universe wouldn't affect him anymore.
However, Alex still chose to tell a kind lie.
"Things don't always go the way we want, but it's better not to share all the unpleasant details."
Alex knew the road ahead would be difficult, and it might be a thousand times worse than what Dean and Sam had faced. In this situation, it would be hard to stop. He had to become stronger.
Just like Chuck had written Dean and Sam's lives, if there was someone writing his life, Alex needed to be strong enough to punch them in the face.
"I still owe you that drink I promised you last time."
Jo lowered her head, and her once sunny smile darkened.
Hearing this, Alex sighed softly. He stared at Jo for a long time.
In the end, he raised his hand and gently tapped Jo on the forehead, smiling as he answered.
"Forgive me, Jo. Next time."
This departure didn't cause much of an impact.
Since Alex had already visited the zombie hero universe once, and with Miss Minutes's location, he didn't need to go to Las Vegas to find a rift to Heaven anymore.
As he pushed open the door of the Harvelle's Roadhouse, Alex saw everyone outside turn to look at him. Even Batman and the others were awkwardly chatting, or gazing at the sky, contemplating life.
Seeing this, Alex couldn't help but sigh in amusement.
"I know you've been eavesdropping."
"Hey, Alex, when did you come out? So, have you said your proper goodbyes?" Pietro quickly approached.
"Your acting is terrible, Pietro. When you move quickly, you stir up a breeze. Do you think I didn't notice? You were just pressed up against the tavern window," Alex shoved Pietro aside.
"Hahaha, I was just curious," Pietro scratched the back of his head. He then suddenly noticed Kara staring at him. After a brief moment of thought, Pietro quickly continued.
"By the way, Alex, who's the young girl inside? Your girlfriend?"
At this question, Alex paused for a moment.
After a short silence, Alex shook his head and sighed.
"A very... good little sister."
"Oh, so she's your sister. No wonder you said something like 'forgive me, next time.' By the way, you're not a sis-con, are you?" Pietro teased with a grin.
"You brat, looks like you watch too many anime. If you're so into it, you don't need to go back to the wasteland. You can just come with me to other universes and keep watching," Alex raised an eyebrow.
"Well, that's not a bad idea, but can I request to bring one more person?" Pietro glanced cautiously at Ashley in the crowd.
"Go away," Alex shoved Pietro aside, laughing softly.
But soon, Alex adjusted his mood and quickly walked over to Clark and Bruce Wayne.
"Alex."
Clark and Bruce Wayne nodded lightly.
"So, are you ready?" Alex asked calmly.
"Although we're not sure about the virus's activity after the contamination is removed, from the information we have, it's clear that the virus is not incurable. At least there have been successful cases, and the most crucial point is that there's a way to neutralize it," Bruce Wayne said, recalling the data and clues Alex had gathered earlier.
"If nanotechnology can decompose the zombies, that proves the virus is not unbeatable. But we can only confirm this once we're there."
"And, based on the information you provided, both the Zombie Hero Universe and the Z Universe have yellow suns, and the Sentinel was infected by the virus after returning to human form."
"Then I can deduce that once we're there, Clark and Kara will be invincible."
"Technically, yes, but we must remain cautious. After all, it's a world that has been ravaged by pollution. Even if the contamination is gone now, we can't guarantee it won't return," Alex reminded them.
"I understand your caution. The strange forces that alter reality through pollution are indeed difficult to deal with," Bruce Wayne nodded in agreement.
"By the way," Alex suddenly remembered something. "Has the string of numbers been decoded yet?"
Hearing Alex's question, Bruce Wayne looked over at Reed Richards. After all, it was Mr. Fantastic who had first been told about this task by the Fantastic Four, and the two had been researching it together.
Mr. Fantastic stretched his neck and peered through the crowd, finally arriving in front of Alex and Bruce Wayne, saying slowly.
"The decoding process hasn't been ideal. I've tried over 20,000 evolutionary algorithms in the House of Mystery, but I still can't decipher the meaning of those numbers. It really seems like it's just plain binary."
"Thanks for your hard work."
Although no breakthrough had been made, Alex wasn't discouraged.
Everything related to the pollution was extremely bizarre. If this code was really that easy to crack, the harm done by pollution to these universes wouldn't be so severe.
"Alright, friends."
Alex took two steps back, standing in front of everyone. His eyes scanned the faces of those present, his expression serious as he spoke.
"I believe you all know the purpose of this mission. Reed here should have explained it clearly, so I won't go into further details.
In short, there's a group of zombie lunatics preparing to stir up chaos across the multiverse, trying to spread the virus to other peaceful universes and destroy more worlds.
Our task is simple—kill.
No mercy, no redemption. We kill anyone we see infected. I know there might be a possibility of curing those poor souls who have turned into zombies, but!
They are, after all, the products of contamination. I cannot risk gambling on whether the pollution is truly gone. That would be irresponsible to our own safety."
After Alex finished speaking, he calmly looked at everyone.
A few seconds passed, and he noticed that no one stepped forward to oppose him. This surprised Alex a bit, considering how many of these heroes had moral standards on par with 'saints.'
But upon further thought, those high-moral heroes were either thriving or already dead due to their kindness. The people in front of him were all monsters who had crawled out of the apocalypse.
Even Superman had killed Steel, and Batman, in a brainwashed state, had destroyed countless planets across the universe, slaughtering countless lives.
Of course, this didn't mean these heroes had started to see life as cheap, but in their eyes, the limits of justice had been lowered quite a bit.
"Alright."
Alex nodded firmly, then turned and opened several purple portals.
"Let's go!"
