In the vastness of space, beneath the dome of the moon, the gray-white lunar soil stretched endlessly to the horizon, evoking a profound sense of desolation and antiquity.
Standing there, anyone would feel an emptiness that reached deep into their soul.
The Watcher stared blankly at Alex, his gaze unfocused. After a long silence, he let out a slight sigh.
"I... I've never even considered this before. The power of the pollution is too incomprehensible. Not just for me—even the most brilliant among us Watchers dare not draw conclusions about such a force. But I think you're right."
"Brother, this is the first time for all of us to truly engage with pollution. Like you said earlier, its origin is bizarre, so nothing about it should surprise us. When it comes to this, we should boldly hypothesize and carefully verify."
Alex used telekinesis to remove the quantum bracelet from the zombie's arm. In that instant, the quantum bracelet completely lost its function, severing its connection to this universe.
"When I interacted with the polluted zombies earlier, I accidentally discovered that my energy seems to affect them. Maybe your Watcher technology can help answer some of my questions."
As he spoke, Alex turned to look at the Watcher and asked,n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
"Do you have any insights?"
The Watcher slowly turned his body, his expression serious as he met Alex's gaze.
"Time Bard, to be honest, your very existence is a miracle. In the flow of time and the multiverse, beings like you are exceedingly rare. Even we cannot fully comprehend you."
"Yeah, I've heard that from many people. But I'm curious—what do I mean to this world? Or, to put it another way, what's your mindset in observing me?" Alex asked, shaking his head as if contemplating something deeper.
"As Watchers, when faced with a life that shouldn't exist in this world, don't you feel the urge to intervene? What if I disrupt the development of the multiverse?"
The Watcher didn't reply immediately; instead, he offered a kind smile.
"Don't worry too much about it. Don't trouble yourself over your power—just do what you want to do. You've already earned my friendship. We're friends, aren't we?"
"Thank you."
"No need to thank me, Time Bard. You've already demonstrated your worth through your actions. What's happened here has been witnessed by the entire Watcher community. They're amazed by your feats, and you deserve the respect of all Watchers."
After experiencing so much together, the Watcher now saw Alex as one of his own. After all, when it came to dealing with the pollution, they were comrades fighting on the same front.
After a moment's pause, Alex shifted his gaze to the distant Earth.
It had been a long time since he had looked at Earth from this perspective. It was still beautiful. Sadly, this planet, which should have been full of boundless hope, had become completely lifeless.
Not just Earth—this entire universe would no longer respond.
"What will this place become in the future?" Alex suddenly asked.
Hearing this, the Watcher followed Alex's gaze, calmly looking into the distance.
"With the pollution gone and all life devastated, the Supremes have completely abandoned this place. Without outside intervention, this universe will gradually lose its vitality and fade into the multiverse, breaking into countless fragments to be consumed and integrated by other universes."
"Returning to the roots."
"You could put it that way," the Watcher said with a trace of emotion. "If the multiverse is a tree, these dying universes are like withered leaves, eventually turning into nourishment for other branches. This is nature's law, an unbreakable rule."
"What about the zombie universe? It seems like a calamity beyond its control," Alex asked again.
Hearing this, the Watcher shook his head slightly.
"The same outcome. However, since that universe has interacted with multiple others, perhaps it's also a means for certain Supremes to test the waters. What its future holds, I'm unsure."
At that moment, Alex suddenly sensed something, his eyebrows lifting slightly.
"Is there any progress?"
The Watcher also noticed Alex's reaction and spoke softly.
Nodding gently, Alex activated the magical communication link with the heroes. Each overseers agent could communicate with him via their tattoos.
"How's the situation, ladies and gentlemen?"
In the vastness of space, magical energy projections appeared, and several familiar figures emerged before Alex.
"Xandar has been completely cleared out, not a single survivor left. Kara and I are doing the final inventory. There are plenty of large ships and energy technologies here. With these, we might even be able to rebuild the Watchtower on the wasteland," said Black Canary.
Behind her, Kara was visibly moving massive ships and arranging them with others, clearly intent on taking everything.
"Counter-Earth has also been cleared. We even found the High Evolutionary's research data and his life-evolution device. Luthor is going to lose sleep over this one," Damian chimed in.
The next image showed Wonder Woman lifting Thanos's corpse off his throne and casually tossing it onto the ruins. She then turned toward Alex and spoke.
"The zombies on Titan have been exterminated. We're cataloging the spoils, but it's pretty barren here. Other than some advanced weapons, there doesn't seem to be much to aid in rebuilding the wasteland."
"Earth's cleanup is almost complete as well. But... it looks like Clark will need a bit more time. Those tough-skinned guys aren't going down easily. Meanwhile, we could check out the Avengers' base. There should be plenty of good stuff there," said Mister Fantastic, visibly excited.
Fiddling with a device in his hands, Reed Richards continued,
"By the way, Alex, guess what I found here?"
Without waiting for Alex to respond, Reed continued,
"This world has a Watcher's Fortress! I just found out about it. If we can locate it, we might be able to loot it completely. The Watcher's technology is far more advanced than we imagined—it could save us a lot of time and effort."
"Ahem."
Alex cleared his throat and discreetly glanced at the Watcher.
At that moment, the Watcher leisurely tilted his head upward as if counting the stars, completely ignoring Alex's group.
Smiling faintly, Alex replied,
"Let it go, Reed. The Watcher's technology isn't part of our mission."
Reed froze for a moment.
"But..."
"No buts. Focus on your assigned tasks. As for the others, once your work is done, help Clark and Pietro if you can. That's all."
The war was drawing to a quiet close during Alex's conversation with the heroes.
This wasn't exactly a grand battle. It was merely a cleanup operation led by Alex and a team of heroes from various universes.
In truth, the Watcher could have handled this alone or sought others to help. But Alex suspected the Watcher had deliberately asked him, with a flimsy excuse, as a way to repay a favor.
After all, without Alex's involvement, these two universes would likely have been trapped in an endless cycle of entanglement. The stalwart Watcher would have been stuck here forever, like a warden.
But now, the outcome was different. The most dangerous pollution had been eradicated, and Alex had gained crucial clues. Though the mystery remained unsolved, the results were not insignificant.
As for the Watcher, he was finally free to return to his original duties.
At that moment, Stark's voice suddenly broke through.
"Alex, I think I've figured out the meaning of those numbers!"
