Chapter 31: Ling Lin’s Disappearance
Chapter 31: Ling Lin's Disappearance
The first place she looked at was around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, this town was full of people who were struggling to survive. No one would be willing to spend their money to hire others if they could do it themselves.
Helplessly, she had no choice but to go to the more prosperous town across the street.
She visited restaurants, hotels, dessert shops, and many other places. She applied as a waitress, a receptionist, and even a cleaner. However, when the hiring managers saw how thin her body was, they all scoffed and rolled their eyes. She was well-known around town, they knew that she had heart disease and had a criminal record. Knowing all of this, they refused to hire her.
It would be a lie to say that she wasn't defeated or discouraged after being rejected many times. However, Pei Xin could also accept it. There would not be a worse outcome than now.
Pei Xin went looking around many places. The more rejection she faced, the heavier her feet dragged. In the end, she was still left with nothing. She had no choice but to drag herself home empty-handed.
The sun was slowly setting, but the lights in the house were not on yet. Ling Jin had been coming home late more often, but wasn't Ling Lin? Why didn't he turn on the lights? Could he have fallen asleep mid-day?
Pei Xin suppressed the bad premonition in her heart and turned the lights on. "Ling Lin, I'm back..."
There was no response from her son. Panicked, she walked around and checked every nook and cranny of the house. Ling Lin was not on the bed or in the bathroom. There weren't many places he could hide in such a small house.
Pei Xin helplessly fell to the ground and stayed still for a while. After a while, she picked herself back up and ran to the surrounding neighbors to ask where her son had gone.
She had run all over the slums, but no one had seen Ling Lin.
Pei Xin dejectedly walked to the side of the road. She thought of Annie, but her phone number was with Ling Jin. She wanted to look for Ling Jin, but she didn't know where his construction site was, nor did she know if Ling Jin was at the construction site.
She shuffled like a walking corpse lost of all vitality or a puppet being controlled by the puppetmaster. Ling Lin was the only reason she had the will to live. She didn't know how she was going to live if Ling Lin was gone from this world.
"Are you looking for a child?"
Just as Pei Xin was busy moping, an old man who was picking up scraps walked over.
"A child about this tall?" The old man asked as he gestured to a certain height with his arm.
Pei Xin hurriedly nodded. "Yes, yes! Did you see him today? Where did he go?"
The old man's voice was a little hoarse. "In the afternoon, a well-dressed man brought a few men in black suits and took him away."
Based on this description, Pei Xin could immediately confirm who it was.
She hurriedly thanked the old man and rushed to the Lu family's residence. She, who had always been thrifty, even hailed a taxi to get there sooner.
"Are you sure you want to go here?" Hearing the address that Pei Xin gave, the driver was filled with disbelief. Pei Xin's attire did not seem like she could enter and exit that place freely.
"I'm sure of it. Please, I'm in a hurry." Pei Xin thought that the driver was being kind.
The driver raised his eyebrows. 'Young ladies nowadays are capable of anything. They think they can just go to the most expensive place in the capital and seduce whoever they want.'
The driver drove to the entrance of the residential area where the villa was located, but he could not go any further.
Pei Xin stuffed the money into the driver's hands and ran towards the mansion. This was the quickest she had run in her life.
When she reached the entrance, she was stopped by someone.
"Excuse me, outsiders are not allowed to enter this place. This is private property."
The Lu family's security guards were changed every day. He had not seen Pei Xin a few days ago, but even if he had seen Pei Xin's current appearance and recognized her, he would not have let her in.
"I'm begging you, let me in! Please! My son is inside." Pei Xin looked at the person in front of her and put her hands together in front of her as she begged softly.
The woman's hands were frail, but her skin was very fair. Her face was covered in tears, and her eyes were starting to swell — she looked weak and pitiful.
"Miss, you must be mistaken. Your son won't be here. Go back home and look for him. If you still can't find him, you should call the police." The security guard sighed helplessly. Although he pitied the person in front of him, it was his duty to not let her in.
"No, no, it must be Lu Li. Lu Li kidnapped my son. Ling Lin must be inside." Pei Xin refused to step away. She was not sure what Lu Li was doing to her son. She had to save him!
