Chapter 29: People Change
Chapter 29: People Change
'Hey big boy!'
"Oh god," Laz groaned
"Come on, time to get it up baby."
"Jesus, this thing has different wake up settings," Laz groaned out load again, turning over to find his phone.
"I cant't wait until you stick that huge meaty rod right in my.."
Hitting the cancel button, Laz sat up and looked at his phone. He didn't want to get reminded about any big meaty rods.
'Honestly, an alarm like that would not go over well if I ever brought a girl home,' Laz thought to himself as he looked around the shabby apartment.
'Actually, that's probably not my biggest problem. I doubt she would even want to stay the night.'
Getting up and walking to the bathroom, Laz took off his boxers as he turned on the water. Stepping back for a moment, he caught sight of himself in the mirror and couldn't help but be surprised.
When did he get abs?
Looking a bit closer he started poking himself like he wasn't sure they were real. Although he was wondering what was happening, he couldn't help but look a little lower.
"WHAT THE FUCK?" He yelled.
"OH HELL NO."
It was longer by at least 2 inches. Laz couldn't help but momentarily think about cutting it off. He couldn't help but think about Joey and he wasn't going to deal with that.
He didn't want to cut it off either.
'Damn it.'
After poking it a few times and not getting a reaction, he felt a little better. He figured the best thing to do would just be to keep an eye on it.
Turning back to look at the mirror he saw the abs and the slightly better defined muscles and thought that maybe these changes were the result of the energy he absorbed. It was turning his body stronger while at the same time boosting his testosterone, causing him to be more manly.
Since he could explain it away, he decided to just go with that as opposed to thinking about it more. He didn't want to cut it off either so he decided to just forget about it and take his shower.
Feeling the hot water run down his skin, he said a quick thank you to Joey.
-.
Walking out the door and down the stairs, Laz couldn't help but take a glance at Joey's place. The door was closed and the moving truck was gone. Apparently the guys were very good at what they did.
Walking along the streets, Laz couldn't help but focus his hearing while strengthening his sight. He looked around and was able to notice many things.
A guy walking his dog was talking on his phone to a woman who was excited about him getting back from overseas and couldn't wait to see him. He told her he was getting on the plane now and would be back before she knew it. After a few complaints about how work always took him away from her, he finally promised he would spend all his time back with her. As he hung up the phone, the dog pulled him towards a driveway where a woman was helping her kids into her car.
After she backed out of the car and closed the door, the guy walked up to her and kissed her.
"All done?" She asked.
"Yeah, he will be good for today."
"Alright, are you all packed for your trip?"
"Yeah, I will have Benny drive me to the airport in a bit. Will you be ok?"
"Yeah, my mom will be coming to stay.."
Laz walked away and shook his head. He wasn't surprised. Most people never realized the things that were happening right around them. He wasn't surprised though. He would be more surprised if there was anyone normal anymore.
Walking up the stone steps, Laz couldn't help but smile. He felt reassured about the normal life that he could live at school. Everything seemed to have been a blur the last few days and coming here helped him to step out of that.
Walking the hallways, people seemed to be talking mostly about Yggdrasil and the strange things happening to people.
"Can you believe the things they are saying are happening? People turning into monsters and stuff?"
"Yeah, it's crazy. People are just showing up like villains from a bad superhero flick."
A couple were walking by and talking about the same thing that everyone else was.
"Did you hear about that other guy though?"
"Who?"
'Who?' Laz thought to himself. Although he hadn't been following the the news, he wanted to keep tabs on the different people who got attention.
He wanted to know what they were experiencing by being different as he knew he would face it sometime in the future.
"It's this guy name Jason. He's got this crazy ability to control fire."
"Is he made of fire?"
"What? No. Of course not."
"Well, you had the big green guy and the smoke guy already. Smoke guy is made of smoke right?"
"Yeah, but Jason is different. He got these cool red strips on his face. It looks like tribal war paint."
"What, like seriously?"
"Yeah, dude's fucking awesome. They are calling him a hero or a chosen of god or something."
'So if you look cool, your like a god. But if you look hideous, your a monster huh?' Laz thought to himself.
'Makes sense.'
As he kept walking, Laz heard similar conversations all over the place. People were showing videos to each other of this guy left and right. He could cause a flame to form above his hand. He could also move it around and even send it flying around him. If it hit something, it was like a small explosive. One of the most popular videos was of him throwing it into the back of a can and the can would shoot off like a rocket.
'Great, the guy could make fireworks or help you find something in the dark. Real hero stuff right there' Laz thought, somewhat annoyed.
The worst part was the view count kept climbing as everyone shared and liked his video.
'He's an idiot.'
Laz knew better. Guys like this who were searching for fame were the dumbest of the dumb. They would be found and examined the same way that the freaks were. Maybe he had a chance since he still looked human, but Laz wasn't going to take that gamble.
Even though he had a power of his own, he wasn't going to tell anyone.
'Besides, it's not that flashy as matchstick man,' Laz admitted.
Although Laz had stopped focusing his hearing and turned his sight normal since focusing that much in such a crowded area would be a pain, he still was being sensitive to his surroundings. It was because of this he felt like there was someone watching him.
As he stood still for a bit and took some deep breaths off to the side of the hall, he started to look around to see if he could determine who was looking at him. He felt like he could trust his instincts as they have been serving him well so far.
It was this moment that he remembered Tony saying someone would get in contact with him, so he felt like it was probably that. Looking around at people's faces, he tried to see if they would make eye contact with him, but none of them did. It seemed more like the girls he looked at would turn their heads away shyly while the guys seemed to snap their heads away quickly, as though hoping he didn't see them looking. It was a weird experience.
Laz didn't know this, but the aura he was giving off was somewhat dangerous. It was something these teens had no experience with and therefore felt exciting to the women but threatening to the guys.
Standing there for a few minutes, he made it seem like he was just waiting for no reason, thinking the guy would walk up to him discretely and talk to him. He was rather disappointed by the result.
After standing there for over 10 minutes with nothing happening but the random people walking by, he knew he had no choice but to get to class.
The funny thing was that he knew he was still being watched, but he had no idea by who.
