Chapter 598:  Elemental Planes

Chapter 598:  Elemental Planes

Professor Whitaker stood before the lectern, gazing at the graduate students in the classroom before her. Behind her, the chalkboard was clean and clear, waiting to be used by the hovering pieces of chalk.

The old professor commanded the room with an aura of authority despite the gentle smile on her face. The students knew better than to disrupt her class, so they all paid rapt attention to her lecture—Adam included.

"The School of Summoning as you all know," she began, "specializes in calling forth creatures, objects, or energies from elsewhere in the world to serve the caster. This 'elsewhere' is the Spirit World.

"Summoning is an intricate discipline, requiring mastery of the energies of the various planes in the Spirit World, deep knowledge of the summoned creatures, and a blend of arcane and contractual elements to ensure their cooperation or control."

She stepped down from the podium and walked toward the end of the classroom with her hands clasped behind her back. "Let us begin with the study of the planes within the Spirit World."

The old woman looked around the classroom, trying to test someone on this knowledge. Finally, her eyes landed on Adam who was sitting at the back of the classroom, jotting something down on a notebook.

Her lips twitched incessantly as she thought to herself in bewilderment, Just what did this brat come across in the Raven Inheritance for him to physically transform so drastically?

It's like he's aged in reverse. Oh, how much I wish I could get my hands on whatever he did… Tsk, tsk!

"Adam," she called out. "Explain the major planes of the Spirit World."

The raven-haired youth was absentmindedly drawing figures of funny-looking snakes in his notebook when Professor Whitaker called out to him. He snapped out of his daze and looked at her, answering, "Like the five elements that shape our world, the Spirit World consists of five major planes."

Professor Whitaker knew that he had a deep understanding of the Spirit World, far more than his peers. So she didn't mind him continuing the lecture on her behalf. This was also one of the main reasons why she made Adam her research assistant.

Adam thought for a few moments, combing through the memories of the experts from the Greater Universe, thinking about what to divulge and what not to. Finally, he began giving a detailed explanation, "Let us start with the Elemental Plane of Air.

"It is an infinite expanse of sky with no solid ground. Judging by the records of the elementals summoned from this plane, its terrain consists of floating islands, clouds, and constant winds. If a Magus were to travel to this plane, without the flight or levitation spells, they would be at a great risk of falling endlessly."

The students were fascinated by Adam's descriptions. They continued to jot down the important points while at the same time listening to his explanation.

"Next in the Elemental Plane of Water," he continued. "It is a boundless expanse of water with no surface or floor. Only aquatic ecosystems dominate this plane. Floating islands and coral reefs are the closest thing to stable ground. It is said that the pressure increases the deeper one ventures.

"The Elemental Plane of Earth is a vast, solid expanse of rock, gems, and precious metals. Caverns and tunnels form the main pathways through which its residents traverse. This plane is oppressive and claustrophobic for people not accustomed to its lack of open air.

"A scorching realm of endless flames, molten rocks, and rivers of lava make up the Elemental Plane of Fire. The air is filled with intense heat and even the ground is too hot for unprotected creatures to stand on. Ash clouds obscure the sky, and light is ever-present due to the flames." Nôv(el)B\\jnn

He paused for a moment to gather his breath before continuing, "Finally, the Elemental Plane of Wood is a realm of vibrant life, untamed nature, and potent magic. Forests here are lush and infinite, mountains are impossibly tall, and rivers shimmer with sparkling mana.

"The wood spirits that all of us have signed a contract with—thanks to Professor Whitaker—reside in this plane. Moreover, it is known that the elven summoners almost always sign summoning contracts with spirits of this elemental plane."

All the elven students in class nodded their heads in acknowledgment. Being creatures with a natural inclination to nature, they had deep ties to the Elemental Plane of Wood.

Professor Whitaker looked at Adam with approval in her eyes, gesturing for him to sit down. "Well done," she praised.

She continued to walk around the classroom, her face gradually turning solemn. "Remember, students, other than the five major planes of the Spirit World, there are countless other planes in that mystical realm. However, not all of them are safe for Magi.

"Therefore, under no circumstances are you to initiate contact with the spirits of these planes. There are reasons why such planes have been deemed forbidden by the Magi that came before us.

"Planes such as Shadowmuir and the Underworld can corrupt Magi to a great degree. The evil energies that permeate these planes can poison the Magi and even kill them. So you must be cautious and not draw the attention of creatures residing in these planes…"

As Professor Whitaker warned the students about the dangers of these malicious planes, Adam's thoughts drifted to the time when he studied at Clover Academy back in the Southern Federation.

Shadowmuir, the dark echo of the world… He mused.

On our first mission as Magi, Edward, Lisa, and I had been dispatched to Hannes City in Hoffman County. The entrance to the vampire's lair in the city seemed to have some connection with the Shadowmuir.

I wonder how the local Magi are treating that place. Considering the danger that Shadowmuir possesses, I'm sure there have been strong countermeasures put in place by the Twilight Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood had a very weak presence in the Southern Federation. But after Adam's visit to Hannes City and the subsequent discovery of the underground vampire's lair, the Brotherhood's activity in that region had increased.

After returning from his mission, Adam had described everything about the Shadowmuir's possible connection with the vampire's lair to Berger. At the time, the youth didn't know that the gnome was part of the Twilight Brotherhood.

But thanks to him sharing the information, Berger was able to inform the Brotherhood of the possible dangers that the vampire's lair in Hannes City posed. This led to the organization setting up a covert base in that region, studying and guarding the vampire's lair's entrance.

Adam's eyebrows gradually wrinkled as he thought of something peculiar, But how come a mystical plane in the Spirit World such as the Shadowmuir would have a connection with Tron?

Not to mention, it appeared in the Southern Federation of Ulier Continent, a place that can be considered backwater by the continent's arcane standards.

I should contact the Acolytes of the Brotherhood in the Southern Federation and ask them if they've found anything conclusive in the vampire's lair in Hannes City.

I'm sure that place doesn't contain any portal that leads to Shadowmuir, after all, at the time everyone had thoroughly searched the vampire's lair and found nothing. So then what else could it be?
