Chapter 231: Menace Of The Battlefield

The name "Yuming" spread across the battlefield in a matter of minutes as William teleported from Section to Section, saving the lives of many Cultivators and Players alike, simultaneously destroying their enemies with Earth or Space Magic.

Some more intelligent Magical Beasts noticed the situation after a few cycles and began preparing ambushes for William. They waited for him to teleport to injured Cultivators, with Mana prepared beforehand for spells to target his exit point.

William had his Forcefield disabled during the entire fight to keep one of his most identifiable features hidden, but it didn't matter. The moment he sensed an attack flying in his direction, the S-Rank bonus effect of his Reflexes Talent would trigger, slowing down time.

With his immense speed, William was able to make it look like he was narrowly dodging every attack, making the Magical Beasts lose confidence in their own strength. They started using AoE Spells such as a rain of Earth Spike to take down William, but he blocked them all with a wall or dome of Earth.

They even tried a massive Earthquake Spell that cracked the earth below everyone's feet, but William recorrected the damage with his own Earth Element, nullifying the combined efforts of over a hundred Magical Beasts.

If he couldn't block the attacks, he teleported himself and the others out of the way, frustrating the Beasts to no end.

He was untouchable, unstoppable...unkillable! Regarded as a menace of the battlefield, the Magical Beasts began avoiding William altogether, focusing their efforts on the weaker Cultivators that failed to defend from their attacks.

The battlefield entered a stalemate for a while, since the Beasts would retreat every time William teleported to heal the Cultivators. He ate his first two Tier 2 Mana Regeneration Pills to recover, then rushed to the next Section where many Cultivators were injured.

All the while, William kept close tabs on the System Quest. So far, there were only three casualties across the entire battlefield, meaning only three people had died amongst the tens of thousands that showed up.

The number was impressive, but William could tell that the others were becoming exhausted, while the Magical Beasts still had some energy left.

The traps that the Cultivators set had achieved their purpose, stalling or restricting the movements of many Magical Beasts and slowing their push, but it had also allowed the Magical Beasts in the back to keep their stamina high.

Of the ten thousand Magical Beasts, around a thousand had died so far, but only half of the entire Tide had engaged an enemy. The rest were forced to stay back and launch long-range Magic Spells since they couldn't get past their allies.

The Magical Beasts were smart, but they didn't think to split their forces in two groups or attack the City from another angle. They came all at once, with no real strategic plan, only using their own battle experience to target the troublesome enemies and avoid the true monster known as Yuming.

As the first wave of Magical Beasts died, they were replaced by a fresh group that was full of stamina and ready to fight. The Beasts growled and released a massive wave of sand that covered the ground and would allow the Desert Beetles to hide better.

Seeing that they had only wiped out a tenth of the overall force and that they even lost the terrain advantage, many of the Cultivators were briefly demoralized, but when William launched another massive spell and wiped out over a hundred Magical Beasts that had just dove underground, they regained some courage.

They ate a Mana Regeneration Pill before rushing forward with renewed determination, prepared to die for the sake of their City. Their swords clanged against the sturdy hides of the Marauder Scorpions, while their boots stomped on the heads of Desert Beetles that rose from the sand beneath their feet.

But with William on the battlefield, how could he let them die?

Carl was also exhausted, having spent most of his Mental energy controlling his Golden Core Beasts for more than half an hour. He withdrew all ten into their scrolls, then sat back for a while to rest. His Section was the most well-defended, so they were more at ease than the other groups.

Not only did they have the most powerful Cultivators in their group, they also had the most extensive Array of traps, improved greatly with William's help. There was little chance of the Magical Beasts breaching their lines.

William teleported to Section One, where he saw the Thin Creek Guild Receptionist, Jenny, impaling a group of Sandicores on a massive Ice Spike that reminded him of a kebab. Her Cultivation had advanced another Realm, reaching the early stages of the Golden Core Realm, and her strength had flourished.

It seemed that all the fighting against the Beast Tides had spurred her growth greatly. William admired this girl's talent, who had grown up in a small village and didn't have any backers other than the Guild Master.

Also in Section One were the people of the Array Hall. He could see Array Master Fowley weaving Spatial Arrays that teleported Magical Beasts that broke past the main group back into their own, creating chaos in the process.

They arranged the battlefield to stack the edges, forcing the Magical Beasts to funnel into the center, impressive. William commented after finally gaining a full understanding of the battle. For a Cultivation World with little knowledge of science outside a few rare individuals, William was impressed at their battle strategies and tactics.

He could even see the most powerful members of the City on the walls, focusing their Mana into a wide-range protection and detection Array alike that would scan for unnatural enemy movements while also protecting the City walls from collateral damage.

It seemed that almost everyone was here except the City guards, who William assumed were maintaining order from within the City. It wasn't unnatural for some malicious Cultivators to take advantage of a Beast Tide and rob stores blind or try to steal from the treasury.

William joined up with the group from Section One and healed their wounds while the Magical Beasts retreated from him. Once he was done, he flashed all the way back to Section Five to check on the situation, then repeated the process while the Magical Beasts continued their onslaught.

As the Cultivators became used to the Magical Beasts' attacks, William didn't need to heal the others as often. He became bolder, even daring to teleport into the center of the Magical Beasts while simultaneously unleashing an AoE Earth Spell that caused spikes to rise from the ground within a range of five hundred meters in every direction.

The Nascent Soul Cultivators on the walls noticed a Domain-like effect from William's Spell, but it wasn't a true Domain. It was only inspired by one, adopting similar properties to cover a massive area at once. They could tell that it didn't have the usual effects unique to a Domain.

Regardless, their eyes widened in shock upon seeing hundreds of Magical Beasts skewered through and through by the spikes.
