Chapter 39: Live Fire Target Shooting, Robbery Battle Begins!
“Live ammunition shooting!” The company commander’s words ignited excitement in everyone. Even the composed Chen Ming couldn’t resist gripping the steel gun in his arms tightly.
After two months of anticipation, the day had finally arrived! Training with the gun in hand and occasional maintenance, all for this moment. Loading bullets into the magazine, aiming at the target, and pulling the trigger. The sound of bullets and gunpowder explosions had been imagined countless times.
The company commander, witnessing the recruits’ enthusiasm, smiled gently. He understood their excitement. After all, isn’t this day what every soldier looks forward to?
“Platoon leaders, take your teams to the shooting range!” With a wave of the commander’s hand, the squad leaders led their teams away, each recruit’s face filled with excitement, shedding the fatigue from the morning drills.
As the recruits left, the clerk hurriedly approached the company commander, saluting, “Commander, the leaders of the fourth and seventh companies are here to observe our recruits’ live ammunition shooting.”
The company commander frowned. The fourth and seventh companies in the Red Star Brigade were renowned.
The fourth company, known for sharpshooting, could hit a target three hundred meters away without fail. The seventh company, elite scouts, excelled in reconnaissance and jungle operations.
“Why are they here to watch our recruits? Have they lost their minds?” Commander Lin muttered, realizing they were interested in Chen Ming.
Commander Lin’s gaze fell on Chen Ming while watching the recruits heading to the range. He understood. These two commanders came for him!
“Take them to the shooting range. I know what they’re up to. If they want to compete for my top soldier, I’ll make sure they’re prepared to be swallowed whole!” Lin Changfeng instructed the clerk with determination.
Unaware of the attention he had attracted, Chen Ming joined the recruits at the shooting range, eagerly awaiting his turn for live ammunition.
“Who are those two?” Yu Jun, standing behind Chen Ming, noticed the unfamiliar faces approaching.
The two officers, both captains, looked refined and youthful. One was identified as Ye Qingshan, the sharpshooter company commander, and the other as Hu Zhihu, the elite scout platoon leader.
Chen Ming, unaware of their identities, wandered along with Yu Jun. These officers had come for him, a fact he remained oblivious to.
Under the clerk’s guidance, the officers strolled past the recruits, observing and conversing. Lin Changfeng, eyeing them, muttered, “Old Hu, Comrade Xiaoye, what brings you here today?”
Hu Zhihu and Ye Qingshan, close in age to Lin Changfeng, exchanged greetings with their usual nicknames. The mystery behind their visit was yet to be unraveled. The two observed Lin Changfeng’s displeasure and understood he wished to drive them away. Despite their awareness, both were determined to meet the renowned Chen Ming and test his capabilities. They couldn’t leave so easily.
Hu Zhihu chuckled, saying, “Lao Lin, it’s said you have a way with training recruits. Comrade Xiaoye and I came to observe and see what kind of soldiers you’ve molded. If I’m assigned to a recruit company in the future, it would be beneficial to learn.”
Lin Changfeng, unyielding, snorted, “Stop pretending. I heard you want to snatch a good recruit from me!”
Exposed, Hu Zhihu awkwardly chuckled, not confirming nor denying. The wisdom in their conversation was evident.
Ye Qingshan, the commander of the fourth company, intervened, smiling, “Commander Lin, don’t misunderstand. How recruits are allocated is a matter for the brigade headquarters. We can’t intervene. Don’t think so poorly of us.”
Lin Changfeng rolled his eyes at their grandiosity.
The brigade headquarters indeed assign recruits, but finding a promising recruit and influencing the decision was not uncommon.
Lin Changfeng could see through their intentions. Chen Ming’s exceptional qualities made him a coveted recruit. The competition among companies was fierce, and these two commanders were just the beginning. Ye Qingshan and Hu Zhihu were diplomatic, emphasizing their innocent intentions while secretly vying for Chen Ming.
Lin Changfeng had already decided. In a few days, he would appeal to the brigade commander. If Chen Ming hadn’t been assigned to him, he wouldn’t leave, even if it meant causing a headache for the brigade commander.
As different companies sought to recruit Chen Ming, the brigade commander would face a challenging decision. Each commander had compelling reasons to have Chen Ming in their ranks.
Ultimately, it was a delicate situation within the brigade, and decisions couldn’t be taken lightly. The brigade commander would soon find himself in a predicament.
