Chapter 1287: Honor and Notoriety

Chapter 1287: Honor and Notoriety

Staring as Darklight's body gradually faded away from his sight as the man's last few words lingered in his words, a mix of emotions swirled within Valyr's body as he continued to look calm on the outside.

Though, those emotions ultimately culminated into that of relief the moment the man's body had fully disappeared, prompting him to dispel the barrier that had trapped Darklight in one spot all this time.

"Whew."

With them having successfully escaped what could have possibly become a worst-case scenario for them, SeventhShield and the others audibly let out wide sighs of relief, only to fall silent once more as they looked at the back of the one who stopped that worst-case scenario from happening.

"..." Continuing to stare at the spot where Darklight last stood, a whirlwind of thoughts lingered within the young man's mind, causing him to ask himself soon after whether or not the things he'd done to Darklight were the right thing.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Unfortunately, before he could come to a conclusion regarding his question, Valyr soon heard a cascade of notifications erupting from the system.

Briefly glancing at the others as he thought about what they would do now that both Darklight and the boss had been taken care of, the young man soon brought up his notification screen in front of him.

Ding!

[With a 10+ level disparity between the user and the opponent, the amount of experience obtained shall be increased by 200%.]

[You have slain Darklight (Lv. 24).]

[You have received 23,695 XP.]

[You have slain a being recognized by the system for having taken a step towards the world of sin.]

[Due to the action of killing this being, you've obtained the title 'Junior Upholder of Order'.] 'Well, shit.' Reading through the notifications he received from killing Darklight, Valyr's expression immediately soured the moment he took a look at the last couple of notifications.

'To think players like him already exist before Greater Beyond had been out to the public for a week.'

With his attention focused on the title he obtained from the system, the young man briefly thought back to a feature Greater Beyond had that most players often ignored while playing the game.

The Honor system.

Though neither the players nor the NPCs knew exactly when the honor system was introduced, by the time Greater Beyond was released to the public back on Earth, both players and NPCs noticed that they were gaining points of some sort while doing certain actions.

Fortunately, it did not take long for them to understand the mechanics behind those points, with players immediately understanding how the entire system worked the moment they figured it out.

To sum up the discoveries of those people, as long as one did enough good deeds, one would be able to gain a point of Honor.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

Naturally, if one did enough bad deeds, then one would be able to gain a point of Notoriety. Of course, there were also ways that netted one more Honor or Notoriety, such as completing quests that rewarded such points to the player.

However, the most common method players used to gain these points en masse was none other than to kill players, transforming the points those players earned into the opposite set of points for themselves.

Because of that, players more or less found the Honor system as an interesting way to play the game, especially after considering the fact that one gained a title after amassing enough points on one side.

Aside from that, most players merely found it as an interesting gimmick to bring more life to the game. After all, it worked pretty similarly to the order and chaos systems other VRMMO games had at the time.

Then again, those who thought that way immediately changed their minds after it was found out that a player obtained an incredibly powerful title the moment they reached 500 points of Honor.

Yes.

Because of just one title... greater chaos began to ensue amongst the players.

'[Junior Upholder of Order], huh...'

'To think someone would already amass over 10 points of Notoriety in the first four days of Greater Beyond being open to the public...'

Valyr faintly shook his head at the thought.

'Killing Darklight was definitely the right choice this time.'

'However, only time will tell if doing so was truly a good idea.'

Just as the young man began to ponder over the name of the organization Darklight mentioned, SeventhShield appeared beside him with a look of slight apprehension.

"So... uh... what now?"

"What do you mean what now?" asked Valyr back, pushing his train of thought to the side as he looked back in slight confusion.

"Well..." Twiddling his thumbs together as he pondered over what to say next, SeventhShield eventually let out a low sigh as he briefly glanced at the others in their group. "We're asking for your opinion."

"After all, you were the one who stopped Darklight from doing what he wanted to do. Plus, you also killed the boss on your own."

"If you decide on keeping all of the items that dropped in this boss room, honestly, you have all the right to do so," continued the man with a slight shrug.

"Hmm..."

Getting the feeling that there was a hidden meaning underneath the words that left SeventhShield's mouth, Valyr briefly scratched the back of his head before saying, "Well, I don't really mind if you want the drops from the boss."

"In fact, I also wouldn't mind if you wanted the things Darklight gave me. After all, I'd have to ascend first if I wanted to make use of them."

"You sure?" asked SeventhShield with slight suspicion. "You're not gonna stab in the back like Darklight did, right?"

"..." Feeling an immense urge to facepalm at that moment, Valyr was barely able to suppress himself as he let out a low sigh. "If I did, then I wouldn't have killed Darklight in the first

place, would I?"

Fortunately, that answer was more than enough to put Seventhshield and the others slightly

at ease, finally allowing them to return to how they were before as they began to look at the

drops in greater detail.
