Chapter 26 Comfortable Win
The referee had returned to the pitch to confirm to everybody that the goal was indeed offside.
Unique FC players and fans were happy to hear that but the same couldn't be said for Spree United players and fans.
Even though the guests were happy to have that goal ruled out in their favor, some of the players and fans had worried looks on their faces.
The news about Dave's house getting robbed and Emma currently being at the hospital seemed to have made tensions rise between the players and fans.
Dave was in such good form at the moment and giving him this kind of news in the middle of the match could affect his performance not to talk about Mateo who had been wonderful to watch so far into the match.
"Spree United players and fans are not happy with that result but that was the right decision," Jim said.
"Yeah, but let's just hope that the news that we just dropped doesn't make Dave and Mateo lose focus and keep doing what they are doing till the end of the match," Steve said.
"Why would you drop a news like that and expect them not to lose concentration?!" A fan screamed from the stands.
"Hey, I'm sorry about what happened but you don't have to let this disrupt you and make you lose focus," Adolf said to Dave who was standing over the ball now to take the freekick.
"I know," Dave said looking down at the ball. "I just hope Clark's right."
The referee blew his whistle as Adolf walked back to his position after giving Dave a nod.
Dave played a short pass to the center back who quickly passed the ball to Roland on the left wing.
Roland took a few steps forward with the ball before passing the ball back to Adolf who was trying to break through the middle now.
He was almost dispossessed off the ball by Spree United's central defensive midfielder but he managed to drag the ball back to Aima before that happened.
Aima quickly got on the ball and played a through ball to Minino on the right midfield wing.
Minino ran down the wing but he soon got his path blocked and had no option but to send the ball back to Aima who quickly rolled a pass to Ferran.
Ferran had a lot of space for running in the middle and as always, he was going to make good use of it.
He ran down the middle before playing a long ball over the top to Carlos.
Carlos played the ball forward and made a quick run to get past the defender that was marking him and meet the ball.
As soon as he got his foot on the ball, he found Mateo open and in space and quickly crossed the ball to him.
Mateo rushed toward the low cross and got there before the defenders chasing the ball but his shot had been so poorly struck that it had gone straight to the goalkeeper and was easily caught by him.
"Oh, he could have done better with that chance," Jim said.
The goalkeeper quickly threw the ball to the player in the left wing to begin a counter-attack but Edward was there to meet the ball with a header and over the line, it went for a throw-in.
"I think the news is beginning to affect Mateo because normally that should have been a clear goal for him," Steve said.
"That may be true Steve but you should also remember that he's missed chances similar to that one in previous matches so maybe that's not the problem, maybe it was just one of his poor finishing moments," Jim said.
"Alright, I think we're going to have some changes from Unique FC," Steve said. "Number twenty-three to come off and number eighteen to come in."
"Okay, Roland Ryle will be leaving the pitch now for Jonas Blue," Jim said.
The fans applauded him as he walked off the pitch for Jonas to make his way into the pitch.
"And for the second substitute, Fredinho will be coming off for Unique FC's star striker Fred," Jim said.
The substituting official lifted his board which showed the number seventeen in red and the number nine in green.
"With Fred on the pitch now maybe just maybe Unique FC can get a third goal," Steve said.
"Well, we'll have to watch and see." Jim said.
The throw was taken as the player who had received the ball quickly sent the ball back to the thrower with a backheel pass.
He received the ball and quickly played it through to their left winger who had maneuvered his way around Aima now.
Jonas tried to stop him but he was quickly bodied out of the way as he ran toward the eighteen-yard box from the right wing.
Mateo closed upon him together with Ferran and tried to bring him down with a tackle but the player had quickly spotted Othello make a run into the box and crossed the ball to him.
Adolf had gotten to Othello at that time as the both of them rose to meet the ball.
Othello happened to be the more experienced header as he used Adolf as some kind of support to nod the ball with the side of his head.
Dave was pinned to the spot as the ball bounced on the floor and rolled into the net through the bottom right-hand corner.
"Oh, Spree United have one back!!" Jim screamed. "They finally have one back!"
Othello quickly rushed into the net picked up the ball and began to run back to their half of the post while screaming to his teammates that they could do it.
"That was a terrible mistake by Unique FC, they never should have given Kelvin that much space on the right wing," Steve said.
"Yeah and look at the way he bodied Jonas out of the way," Jim said. "Dave was glued to the spot, he looked totally clueless but I wouldn't blame him for that goal."
"It's Spree United one, Unique FC just one goal in it now, can Spree United get an equalizer, or is Unique FC going to clinch into the lead long enough for the final whistle?
The match had now entered four minutes of extra time and Unique FC were still holding onto their lead.
After that goal, Norman had switched to a very defensive style of play and it had worked quite to stop any of that attackers to do anything.
Right now the ball was a few yards outside the eighteen-yard box with Ferran and Mateo standing over it.
Spree United players had formed a wall with the other players around the goalpost waiting for a possible rebound or clearance.
"Take the free kick Mateo," Ferran said.
"Why? You're the better freekick taker, you should be the one to take it if it has to go in." Mateo said.
"I don't know how true that is anymore but I want you to take it," Ferran said. "I'll run over it and take it as fast as you can."
"Okay," Mateo said.
"If this freekick goes in then everything's over for Spree United," Steve said.
"Ferran steps up to take it, oh he's run over it."
Mateo rushed in at that moment and took the free-kick aim for the top left-hand corner.
The ball flew directly to the target and flew into the back of the net as the goalkeeper was glued to the spot.
"Mateo shoots! Mateo scores!"
"To be honest I didn't think he was going to score that," Steve said.
"Well, he just proved you wrong!"
Mateo celebrated the goal by pointing his fingers up as Ferran quickly made his way to him and gave him a fist bump.
"Well, that's settled, I don't think Spree United are ever going to come back from that one with just two minutes remaining on the clock," Jim said.
Just like Jim said, all Spree United did was pass the ball around without succeeding with any attack as the referee finally blew his whistle to bring the match to an end.
"What a match!" Jim exclaimed. "It somehow looked like Unique FC were going to bottle it after that goal from Othello but they quickly patched themselves up and thanks to that late freekick from Mateo, they were able to settle with a comfortable win."
"So there you have it, the match ends with Spree United one, Unique FC three," Steve said to end the commentary.
