Chapter 275: Acid Rain (4)
When the engine finally started, Yuan Rihui's face lit up with excitement, and he said, "Elder Brother, look! The engine is running again!"
Ling Yi's eyes lit up, and he hurriedly said, "Drive to Shan Wu Resort immediately!"
Even before Ling Yi's instruction, Yuan Rihui had already pressed the accelerator, steering the water tanker toward Shan Wu Resort. With the acid rain pouring heavily, they were racing against time.
The corrosive rain would quickly rust the water tanker's metal components, so they needed to reach Shan Wu Resort before it became unusable.
Because the road was damaged due to the extreme heat, Yuan Rihui couldn't drive very fast. He tried to drive as fast as he could while avoiding cracks and obstacles along the way. Traveling at only forty kilometers per hour, it took them two and a half minutes to reach the entrance of Shan Wu Resort. However, for Ling Yi and Yuan Rihui, those two and a half minutes felt like hours.
Driving past the entrance gate, Yuan Rihui hurriedly scanned the surroundings and noticed a small office building not far from the entrance. Without wasting any more time, he drove directly to the building.
Yuan Rihui parked the water tanker under a roof and breathed a sigh of relief. He turned off the engine, grabbed his backpack, and got out of the vehicle.
As soon as he stepped down, he coughed and quickly covered his nose with his shirt. The pungent, sour smell in the air was overwhelming-stinging his throat, lungs, and even his
eyes.
Seeing his cousin also covering his nose and mouth with a cotton towel, Yuan Rihui hurriedly walked into the office building.
The small office building had only one floor and was empty-just four bare walls.
Judging by the messy and dirty ground, the two brothers realized that survivors had looted the place. In this case, they could use it to take cover from the acid rain because no one would come here for the time being.
Finding a cleaner spot to sit down, Yuan Rihui said, "Elder Brother, I'm going to sleep first. Can you keep watch?"
Ling Yi was also exhausted but unable to sleep. He nodded and replied, "Go ahead. I will call you later."
With his cousin's reassurance, Yuan Rihui covered his face with his dirty jacket and fell asleep almost instantly.
Leaning against the dusty wall, Ling Yi gazed outside, watching the acid rain seep into the ground and contaminate the soil.
He watched for a long time before sighing and murmuring regretfully, "I should have agreed to buy the soil and seeds from those farmers. Alas, opportunity only knocks once."
With another sigh, Ling Yi continued to watch the rain in silence.
The acid rain fell for three consecutive days. On the fourth day, it stopped briefly for ten minutes before resuming.
Meanwhile, inside the underground cellar, Yao Ran and her teammates trained and honed their combat skills every day while the elders focused on tending crops and looking after the young boy.
After ten days in the cellar, the acid rain finally eased and stopped by the afternoon.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Huang Qian, bored of being confined underground, checked daily to see if the acid rain had ceased. After lunch, he checked again and was ecstatic to find silence outside.
Running back to the training room, he shouted excitedly, "Guys, the acid rain has stopped!" Everyone paused what they were doing when they heard this.
Jia Xiang wiped the sweat from her brow with a small cotton towel and asked, "A Qian, are you sure the acid rain had stopped?"
Huang Qian nodded enthusiastically and replied, "Of course! I waited there for over twenty minutes and didn't hear a thing."
Hearing his confirmation, Yao Ran turned to Long Yu and whispered, "Just as you predicted- the rain stopped after ten days. Should we go out and check the situation?"
Long Yu thought for a moment and said, "Mhm. But we need to wait for the air's pH to increase before venturing out."
In his previous life, the air's pH after acid rain would drop as low as 0.2, capable of burning skin and flesh on contact. Inhaling those water particles in the air could severely damage the lungs and cause long-term health issues.
Although Yao Ran had respiratory masks, she wasn't willing to take unnecessary risks. After a moment's thought, she agreed with her boyfriend's suggestion, "Alright."
While the two were discussing, Jia Xiang and the others left to confirm Huang Qian's claim.
Once they were alone, Long Yu leaned in and kissed Yao Ran briefly before coquettishly saying, "Ran Ran, I'm hungry."
Yao Ran chuckled, took his hand, and said, "Then let's get something to eat."
After saying that, she led him toward the supply room to get some food. Following behind, Long Yu sighed and muttered something under his breath, but unfortunately, Yao Ran didn't hear it.
Five days later, Yao Ran and Long Yu decided it was safe to go out. While the others were still asleep, they donned protective suits and respiratory masks before quietly leaving the underground cellar.
The underground cellar's door, although made of stainless steel, was rusted on the outside from the acid rain. Long Yu pushed it several times before it finally opened.
As soon as the door creaked open, Long Yu and Yao Ran were choked by the pungent smell in the air and coughed. The air is filled with the smell of sourness, burn, and rust, stinging their lungs with every breath.
After taking a moment to adjust, they stepped outside. The sight before them was bleak- blackened soil, collapsed buildings, and no sign of life anywhere.
The situation was worse than what Yao Ran remembered from her previous life.
Closing the cellar door behind them, Long Yu reached for Yao Ran's hand. "Let's go," he said
softly.
Snapped out of her daze, Yao Ran nodded. "Mhm."
Hand in hand, the two walked forward, heading toward the villa to survey the aftermath.
