Sanctuary: Safe Haven

Chapter 158: Friendly Spar

The air buzzed with excitement as word spread throughout the Sanctuary about the upcoming spar. It wasn't every day that Canna decided to engage in a friendly battle with his subordinates, and the residents, both old and new, were eager to witness their leader in action.

Children who had never seen Canna fight were especially curious, their eyes wide with anticipation as they gathered around the clearing where the sparring match would take place.

Canna stood at the center of the clearing, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a gleam of excitement. The itch for a good fight had been building for days, and he could no longer ignore it. His three subordinates—Mortem, Vorgrim, and Grimruk—stood across from him, each with their own look of determination. This sparring match was a long time coming.

As the last of the crowd settled in, Canna surveyed the area. The dwarves, who had paused their work, stood in the distance with their eyes fixed on the clearing. The Verdant Wardens and Sylphirs, curious to see their master's fight again, had also gathered. Even Sylvanar, the ancient wooden giant, watched from the edge of the forest.

Canna turned to his subordinates, a grin spreading across his face. "Time to spar, boys!" he announced, his voice carrying through the clearing.

Mortem, Vorgrim, and Grimruk exchanged glances before grinning back at him. The thrill of battle was something they all shared, and they could see that Canna was more than ready for it. They, too, were eager to test their skills against their master.

"Flora, Elandra," Canna called out, turning to the two women who had positioned themselves at the edge of the clearing. "You two will be the referees and make sure the crowd stays safe."

The two nodded enthusiastically, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. Flora's vines subtly emerged from the ground, ready to spring into action if necessary, while Elandra prepared to shield the onlookers with her magic if needed.

Canna turned back to his subordinates, his gaze settling on Grimruk. "You're with me," he said, summoning a sword into his hand. The blade appeared with a flash of light, gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Grimruknodded, his grip tightening on his battle axe as a fierce grin spread across his face. The two of them would face off against Grimruk and Mortem, a match that promised to be both challenging and thrilling.

The crowd fell silent, anticipation thick in the air as the combatants took their positions. The children leaned forward, their eyes wide with excitement, while the older residents watched with bated breath.

Canna raised his sword, pointing it toward his opponents. "Begin!" he shouted, and the sparring match erupted into action.

Grimruk charged forward, his massive frame moving with surprising speed as he wielded his battle axe with deadly intent. His brute strength was unmatched, and his swings were powerful enough to cleave through stone. But instead of meeting his charge with brute force, Mortem hung back, his hands glowing with dark energy as he summoned several skeletal warriors from the ground.

The necromancer's minions surged forward, their bony hands reaching out to slow Grimruk's advance.

Grimruk's battle axe cut through the skeletons with ease, shattering them into pieces, but Mortem remained calm, weaving spells with his hands. He conjured a wall of shadows that rose up to engulf Grimruk, aiming to disorient the massive orc and create an opening for a counterattack.

Meanwhile, Canna and Vorgrim were engaged in a fierce duel of speed and precision. Vorgrim's greatsword swung in wide, powerful arcs, but Canna was quicker, his sword clashing against the greatsword with a resounding clang. Sparks flew as their blades met, the force of their strikes sending shockwaves through the ground.

Vorgrim pressed the attack, his strength pushing Canna back, but Canna countered with a series of rapid strikes, forcing Vorgrim to retreat. The crowd could barely keep up with their movements, the two warriors moving so fast that they appeared as blurs.

As the battle raged on, Mortem's magic kept Grimruk at bay. He switched between different elements, summoning pillars of fire to block Grimruk's path and icy spikes to trap his feet. Grimruk fought fiercely, his strength enabling him to break through most of the necromancer's tricks, but Mortem's versatility made it difficult for the orc to land a decisive blow.

The crowd watched in awe, their eyes wide as they tried to follow the action. The children could barely keep up with the flurry of movement, their gazes darting back and forth as the combatants exchanged blows. Even the seasoned warriors among the crowd were impressed by the display of skill and power.

Finally, Canna managed to land a solid blow on Vorgrim's shoulder, sending the Voragon staggering back. At the same time, Mortem unleashed a torrent of shadowy tendrils that wrapped around Grimruk, pulling the orc down to one knee. For a moment, it seemed as though the battle might be over.

But Canna wasn't done yet. He looked at his subordinates, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, and smiled proudly. "Warm-up's done," he declared, the atmosphere shifting as the words left his lips.

The crowd fell silent, sensing the change. The playful atmosphere vanished, replaced by an intense, almost ominous energy. They could feel the power radiating from Canna as he prepared to take the spar to the next level.

With a burst of energy, Canna transformed into his dragonkin form, his body surging with power as scales covered his skin and his eyes glowed with a fierce, otherworldly light. Grimruk rose to his feet, summoning a massive halberd, while Vorgrim and Mortem unleashed their full aura.

Mortem's skeletal minions, now empowered by his magic, grew in size and strength, their eyes glowing with an eerie light as they prepared to attack.

The ground trembled beneath their feet as Canna looked up at Sylvanar, who had been watching from a distance. "Sylvanar! Erect a barrier for true calamities!" he commanded.

Sylvanar let out a deep groan, his massive form shifting as he extended his hand. A giant green, transparent barrier formed around the clearing, strong enough to contain the fury of the battle that was about to ensue.

Canna grinned, summoning a scythe into his hands. The weapon, though not as powerful as the Bloodfang Scythe, was still formidable in his hands. The crowd watched in stunned silence as the four combatants squared off once more, the air crackling with tension.

"Let's get serious," Canna said, his voice low and dangerous.

With that, the battle began anew. Canna's scythe swung in a deadly arc, its blade slicing through the air with precision and power. Vorgrim met the attack head-on, his greatsword clashing with the scythe in a shower of sparks. The two warriors moved like lightning, their weapons a blur as they fought with everything they had.

Grimruk, now wielding his halberd, charged at Mortem, who responded by summoning a horde of shadowy specters. The specters swarmed around Grimruk, their ghostly hands reaching out to drain his energy, but Grimruk fought through them, his halberd cutting through the shadows with sheer brute force.

Mortem, unfazed by the orc's advance, summoned pillars of earth to rise from the ground, attempting to trap Grimruk in a cage of stone. But Grimruk shattered the rocks with a single swing of his halberd, his raw strength proving too much for the necromancer's constructs.

Mortem's eyes glowed with determination as he switched tactics, launching bolts of dark energy at Grimruk, each strike aiming to sap the orc's strength.

The battle was fierce, with neither side giving an inch. The power radiating from the combatants was overwhelming, the air thick with the energy of their attacks. The barrier Sylvanar had erected strained under the force of the battle, but it held strong, containing the destructive power within.

Canna's blood sang in his veins, the thrill of the fight driving him to push harder, to strike faster. His scythe clashed with Vorgrim's greatsword again and again, the force of their strikes sending shockwaves through the ground. Vorgrim's strength was immense, but Canna's skill and agility kept him just out of reach.

The ground trembled as Canna and Vorgrim clashed once more, their weapons locking in a fierce struggle. Mortem and Grimruk were locked in a similar battle, their powers clashing with a force that sent ripples through the air.

As the battle reached its climax, the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. The crowd watched in stunned silence, their eyes wide with disbelief at the sheer power on display. They had never seen anything like this—four beings of immense strength going all out in a fight that shook the very earth.

But as the dust began to settle, Canna knew they were on the verge of something more. This was no ordinary sparring match; it was a test of their strength, resolve, and unity as a team.

With a final, powerful strike, Canna broke through Vorgrim's defense, sending him staggering back. At the same time, Mortem unleashed a wave of necrotic energy that engulfed Grimruk, forcing the orc to his knees.

The battle was over. The crowd erupted into cheers as the tension finally broke, their excitement palpable as they celebrated the incredible display of power and skill they had just witnessed.

Canna lowered his scythe, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he surveyed his subordinates. They had fought well, better than he could have hoped for. A smile spread across his face as he looked at Mortem and Vorgrim, pride swelling in his chest.

"Well done," he said, his voice filled with satisfaction.

The crowd's cheers grew louder as the four combatants stood together, the bond between them stronger than ever. They had proven themselves, not just to the crowd, but to each other.

As the last of the cheers died down, Canna knew that this was just the beginning. The real battles were yet to come, and they would need every ounce of strength they had to face what lay ahead.

But for now, they had proven their worth, and as Canna looked at his subordinates, he knew they were ready for whatever came next.
