Chapter 162: Breaching Clockwork City

"THE GATES ARE OPENING!"

Rain and the others couldn't believe their ears. For a moment, Rain thought he was seeing things as his eyes took in the sight of the gates slowly creaking open.

"It's . . . opening," he muttered in disbelief, his voice barely above a whisper. But then, the realization hit him like a wave, and a spark of hope ignited in his chest. His expression shifted from shock to exhilaration, his face lighting up with hope.

"General Varlox and the others — they've done it!"

A wave of renewed hope washed over the battlefield as the massive gates continued to open, revealing the fortified interior of Clockwork City. The enemy forces, taken by surprise, hesitated for a moment, their momentum faltering as they realized that they had failed their mission to defend the city.

Rain's heart surged with relief. Against all odds, they had pulled off the impossible. General Varlox and the others had come through, opening the gates when they needed it most.

Now, with the path clear, they could finally put an end to Gorm's rituals without getting bogged down by the Shadowborne legionnaires every day. They finally have a chance to eliminate the root of this problems!

But little did Rain know that the true hero of the day was not the General, nor the Artificer, but a tiny Aasimar who had given everything to make this moment possible.

The enemy, though momentarily stunned, was regrouping quickly, preparing for one final push to close the gates and push Rain's forces outside. They could not afford to waste any more time.

The battlefield erupted into chaos as the tide of the battle shifted dramatically. The enemy, now on the defensive, scrambled to hold their ground, but the momentum had shifted, and Rain's forces, fueled by the sudden turn of events, fought with a ferocity they hadn't known they possessed.

This was their moment — after countless grueling days, after sacrificing so many — they finally had a chance to breach the city. If they hesitated now, everything would be lost.

Rain led the charge, knowing that time was of the essence. The crucial objective now was to storm the city before the enemy forces could regroup and stop them. Fusing with Chi, Rain unleashed a surge of power, carving through the enemy ranks with relentless force.

The morning light gave them the advantage, as the Shadowborne Legionaries were far weaker compared to their strength at night, making it the perfect moment to strike.

Rain tore through the enemy lines with unstoppable momentum. His sword flashing as he cut through the enemy ranks. Beside him, his companions fought with everything they had, their spirits lifted by the sight of the open gates and the knowledge that they could finally confront Gorm and put a stop to his plans.

Meanwhile, #4 expertly operated the controls in the control room, his movements guided by the knowledge of the Clockwork Dragon that had been downloaded into its mind before. The dragon's core, now pulsing within him, guided his actions. He could feel the dragon's presence melding with his own.

As #4 activated the city's defenses, the ballistae, magic cannons, and every weapon system along the walls turned their wrath upon the Shadowborne Legionnaires and Draken. The barrage of firepower cut through the enemy ranks, easing the pressure on Rain and the others as they fought their way deeper into the city.

The relentless assault provided a critical advantage, allowing the forces to push forward.

As the battle raged on outside, #4 noticed something strange happening within the control room. The once-quiet gears and machines were now vibrating with an intensity that was almost violent.

The dragon's core, though immensely powerful, wasn't designed to fully authorize the control room's operations. The system began detecting anomalies, triggering warning signals that echoed through the chamber. It was only a matter of time before the control room would shut down, sealing off access and potentially dooming the entire operation.

However, there was no time to worry about that now. The battle outside was reaching its climax, and #4 had one final task to complete. With a deep breath, he reached for the master lever, the one that would close the gates once Rain and his forces were safely inside.

Outside, Rain led a relentless assault, his forces united with the elves and goliaths in a powerful coalition. Together, they pushed through Draken's forces with unstoppable might, their combined strength shattering the enemy's defenses as they advanced through the gates.

Rain and his forces had made it inside just in time, the last of them slipping through the gates as they closed, cutting off the enemy's advance.

A cheer erupted from Rain's troops as they realized they had made it, the sound of victory ringing out across the city.

The first light of dawn crept over the horizon, the soldiers surged forward, their spirits lifted by the golden rays that promised a turning tide in the battle. They poured into the fortress, their armor gleaming in the early morning sun, which cast long shadows over the dark stone walls.

The Shadowborne legionnaires, once so fearsome under the cover of night, now faltered. The sunlight drained their strength, leaving them sluggish and vulnerable. Their twisted forms, usually shrouded in darkness, were now exposed and weakened, and their general, a hulking figure clad in armor that seemed to absorb light, struggled to maintain control over his faltering troops.

And without the city's defenses to protect them, the enemy was no match for the combined attacks. They were utterly vulnerable under the sunlight, falling swiftly under the ferocity of the coalition's assault.

The soldiers took advantage of the Shadowbornes' sudden weakness, pressing the attack with renewed vigor. The clash of steel rang out across the battlefield as the legionnaires, no longer the unstoppable force they had been in the darkness, were driven back.

Their eerie, otherworldly howls of pain echoed through the air as they fell one by one to the blades of the advancing soldiers. The tide of battle had turned, and the once-daunting enemy was now on the defensive, struggling to hold their ground against Rain and the others.

Rain, along with the other generals, moved quickly through the chaos, their eyes scanning the fortress for any sign of the entrance to the underground hall where Gorm, the dreaded enemy commander, was rumored to reside.

The elders were held captive somewhere within the fortress, and it was up to them to find and rescue them before Gorm could execute whatever dark plans he had in store.

"We need to split up," Santi called out to the others, her voice carrying over the din of battle. "We can't afford to waste time searching the entire fortress together. Some of us will stay behind to hold off the Shadowborne inside the city, and prevent them from flanking us. The rest will go deeper inside and find Gorm."

Elora nodded in agreement despite her earlier outburst of escaping. "I'll stay with the rear guard," she said, her voice steady. "We'll make sure no one gets past us."

Thorgar tightened his grip on his weapon. "We're going with you. We'll need every blade we can get if we're going to face Gorm."

Rain gave a sharp nod of acknowledgment before turning to address the others. "General Rylan, Elora, and Kaelen — you'll hold the line here and keep the enemy troops at bay. The rest of us will storm the fortress. We need to sweep through the remaining forces inside and clear a path to Gorm. Move quickly, stay focused, and don't let anything slow you down.

We're racing against the clock, and every second counts."

The generals quickly divided their forces. The elven Generals and a handful of seasoned warriors remained in the city, forming a defensive line to protect the rear and hold off any Shadowborne reinforcements that might rally.

The rest of the soldiers, led by Rain, pushed forward into the underground, their footsteps echoing off the cold stone walls as they entered the darkened corridors.

"The underground chamber is right beneath the mines," Golly said, pointing to a massive structure in the distance. "There's a shortcut through that building over there."

"Wait, when did you get here?" Rain asked, surprised to see the gnome perched behind Santi.

Golly blinked his large eyes, a grin spreading across his face. "With my latest invention, of course!" He lifted his feet, revealing a strange contraption attached to them. "These beauties let me cover a lot of ground fast. As soon as the gates opened, I jumped over to Santi and hitched a ride."

Rain sighed and shook his head, deciding it was best not to question him further. "Just watch yourself out there," he said, a hint of concern in his voice.

"I'll be fine. This is my city, after all," Golly replied with a grumpy wave of his hand. "I know every nook and cranny. Do you have any idea how massive this place is? The mines are a labyrinth, a maze that could easily swallow you whole. Get lost in there, and you might never make it out alive."

"Golly's right," Helliana added. "We need him to navigate through the maze."
