Chapter 90 - 0088: Rural Medical Team

Chapter 90: Chapter 0088: Rural Medical Team

The issue with the catheter removal was resolved, eliminating a potential problem.

Yang Ping saw the business card still in his white gown, took it out, and pondered for a moment before tossing it into a drawer full of business cards.

Tan Boyun adapted to his new environment quickly. Originally, Director Han planned for him to familiarize himself with the surroundings before officially taking up his position a month later. However, he couldn’t wait and began implementing reforms within a few days of starting work, effectively already assuming his role.

Firstly, he assembled all physicians, from the attending physician down, and dedicated at least five hours per week to training in microsurgery. If this wasn’t met during the week, it would be made up on Saturday or Sunday, with weekly assessments of their training progress.

He argued that every one of them in micro trauma orthopedics must master microsurgery and be capable of carrying out digit replantation. According to the Trauma Emergency Center process set by Director Han, he incorporated the entire micro trauma orthopedics into the Trauma Emergency Center system: whichever group was on duty would handle the surgeries from the Trauma Emergency Center.

Reportedly, he checked on the critical patients every morning and evening, not just those in micro trauma orthopedics but also those in the Trauma ICU. He rushed over several times late at night to guide surgeries.

This enthusiasm was exactly what Director Han wanted. Just as Tan Boyun emulated Director Han by leading a team himself, consisting of himself, Dr. Zhong, and several standardized training students, the team quickly took shape.

Director Han’s patients were all handed over to them, and he left micro trauma orthopedics ahead of time. The transition was incredibly smooth.

The Orthopedics department in the Overseas Chinese Building was named the Comprehensive Orthopedics, and the ward was ready, just waiting to come into operation.

The head nurse for Comprehensive Orthopedics was also chosen: Cai Qiaojun. She was a specialist orthopedic nurse who had been trained and selected in Nandu Province and had spent a year honing her top-notch skills at Hong Kong’s Queen Mary Hospital.

To bolster the new department, Yao Ling handpicked staff based on looks, height, professional level, and other stringent conditions. After numerous rounds of tests and selections, a nursing team was formed.

The equipment for the Orthopedic Research Institute had also arrived and was being urgently fine-tuned. Director Han planned to hold the inauguration ceremony for the Orthopedic Research Institute and Comprehensive Orthopedics on the same day, to celebrate both things at once.

Tian Yuan was planning an academic conference for Tan Boyun, while Song Zimo was training Zhang Lin Xiaowu in microsurgery and arthroscopy. Director Han led Yang Ping on a tour of the Orthopedic Research Institute before inspecting the Overseas Chinese Building, making sure nothing was missing.

After a few rounds, they found no issues.

The two sat down in the new Director’s office of Comprehensive Orthopedics, which was filled with Director Han’s things. The office was now reserved for Tan Boyun.

As soon as they sat down, they didn’t forget to have some hot tea.

“Sit!” Director Han called.

“Thank you!” Yang Ping received the teacup with both hands and sat down.

The director’s office here was much more grand, befitting the Overseas Chinese Building. It was spacious and light, with walls painted with diatom mud, reputedly eco-friendly.

“Nice tea!” This almost became a standard opening remark.

After taking a sip of tea, Director Han gazed at the eight-horse painting on the opposite wall. His fingers tapped rhythmically on the table, revealing good spirits.

He had been too busy recently, neglecting the younger staff. It wasn’t until he saw Yang Ping performing pelvic surgery that he suddenly remembered to offer more support to the younger generation.

“In Comprehensive Orthopedics, you won’t just perform trauma orthopedic surgeries anymore. You’ll perform all kinds of orthopedic surgeries, which is better. Ideally, you shouldn’t specialize too soon at this stage in your career. You should perform a full range of surgeries before specializing in a subfield as a senior assistant. I don’t advocate specializing too early. Have you ever performed arthroscopic surgery before? The lab in Trauma Orthopedics is available for everyone in Orthopedics. Practice more when you have time.”

“I practice there quite often actually,” Yang Ping replied.

“You’re young, you can learn anything quickly.” Director Han encouraged.

“How’s your Doctoral admission test preparation going? Do you want to secure a spot without taking the test?” Director Han asked with concern, considering it a big deal.

For Yang Ping, this was also a big thing. Although it wasn’t all about the degree, in this day and age, education was crucial. A degree symbolized that you have received better professional education. Looking at the Nobel Prize winners, most of them hold doctoral degrees.

Lacking opportunity is one thing, but now an opportunity is staring at him. He had to cherish it and strive for it.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“No need for reserving a spot, I should be able to clear the cut-off. I’m confident.” Yang Ping expressed.

As long as there was no big issue, meaning there was no issue at all, Director Han felt relieved.

“You’ll have to register at the end of this year, exams start in March next year. It’s a tight schedule. You can only succeed, failure is not an option.” Director Han stated.

Yang Ping assured: “Absolutely!”

Director Han leaned back in his chair and enjoyed sharing: “After the Spring Festival next year, we’re sending a team to Tokyo University’s affiliated Hospital for exchange learning. This is a rare opportunity. The list was determined before you came, but I communicated with the Japanese side to add one more spot. The team will be led by Tian Yuan. You, Song Zimo, Tang Fei, and Xiao Su from the operation room will go. Xiao Su is outstanding, we need to cultivate her so she can further train a bunch of specialized orthopedic nurses.”

Going to Japan was a good opportunity. Even though the system provided a training space, the exposure and concepts were only attainable through interaction. A doctor isn’t just a craftsman.

“Japanese people have a strong craftsmanship spirit, and their surgical skills are world-class, even better than the United States and Germany. Never be narrow-minded, acknowledging others’ superiority is true confidence. Learn from others and then surpass them. Shutting yourself away and claiming to be the best won’t do. I suggest you catch up on Japanese. You can exchange learning experiences with Song Zimo and Tian Yuan. I have many Japanese learning books, you can borrow some.” Director Han patiently guided.

“Director, do you speak Japanese?” Yang Ping had never heard him speak it before.

Director Han replied: “I spent a year each in Japan, the United States, and Germany when I was young. I naturally understand some Japanese, I just haven’t used it for a long time.”

His English was pretty solid, slightly intensifying his effort might do the trick. But Japanese was entirely new to him. Yet, it was not difficult if he diligently put in the work.

When he didn’t have the system, he was confident about learning anything. Let alone now he had the system to back him up. It certainly wasn’t a problem as long as he put in sufficient effort, many things would become simple then.

“Also, in a few days, the hospital will organize a rural medical assistance event. Everyone was busy previously and I hadn’t assigned anyone. Now that Tan Boyun has taken over orthopedic trauma, you guys don’t need to be on duty, so I signed you up for it. Think of it as a vacation and take a rest. You have been working hard recently. It’s in Nanqiao County, an ethnic minority county not far from Shipo County. You will be carrying out free clinics and guiding local hospital surgeries for two weeks. At that time, Director Miao will be your guide. Oh right, Xiao Su from the operating room will also go.” Director Han said.

What does he mean? Did Director Han know about his slight fondness toward Xiao Su? Why did he mention Xiao Su? It must’ve been loose-lipped Zhang Lin who spread the word.

The two chatted for a long time. Director Zhuang and Director Kong learned Director Han was in the Comprehensive Orthopedics Department and immediately went down to converse with him. Yang Ping found an excuse to leave.

After leaving Director Han’s office, Yang Ping felt invigorated. Not because of the Japan trip, but because of the rural medical aid team.

If there’s nothing else, he could check out the Trauma Orthopedics Laboratory. But there were too many people and no extra equipment, so he might as well go home.

Once home, he took out some vegetables from the fridge, cooked rice, and stir-fried a dish of farmer’s small stir-fried meat. He ate to his heart’s content.

His phone hadn’t rung all day, so quiet, making him feel empty inside.

Yang Ping entered the system space again and read books for several months.

Actually, residing in the system space for a prolonged time required formidable willpower.
