This time, Luke put points into Focus and Speed. He realized that he couldn’t keep destroying potential weapons on zombies all the time. He had to fight them without relying on Weapon Augmentation. Even though the level-ups and the status points were useful, the number of resources he could find was limited.
Luke slowly entered the supermarket because he already could see dozens of zombies around. He needs to clear the place from them before he can have some peace of mind to look for weapons and food that they haven’t touched.
When the first three zombies approached, Luke couldn’t help but feel thankful for the fact that they were dumb and they were crossing a tight corridor. Those stupid creatures came one at a time, and before their arms of the first could touch Luke, he cut them off with a single strike. He regretted that choice, though. Because the zombie’s blood began to fall on the shelves that apparently had food untouched by them.
The stupid zombie still insisted on the attack, but without worrying about its arms, Luke easily beheaded the creature. Luke did the same thing two other times, and when he finally had some room to breathe.

“Amazing, it almost looks like you have previous combat experience,” Shalia said.
Now that Luke thought about it, he noticed that he wasn’t thinking too much of all the blood and corpses he was seeing. Was it because he played countless gore games in high school? He sure hoped that was the case. Otherwise, he might start thinking that he had a short fuse somewhere…
After thinking about that for a second, Luke finally noticed the smell of blood and rotten flesh, and then his stomach got upset. He almost threw up…
“It looks like the adrenaline keeps you from noticing certain things…” Rina said. “I am sorry to say this, but… you will need to be more careful with your weapons.”
Luke checked his weapon and noticed that the durability decreased by half… it was only obvious that it would since it got dirty by blood and rotten flesh many times. Not to mention, it was a weak weapon.
“It seems there are some people hidden in the warehouse,” Rina said.
“Leave them be, those cowards…” Shalia said.
“There are women and kids as well,” Rina said.
“All of them received weapons… what is your point?” Shalia asked.
“Enough,” Luke said. “You can keep these details to yourself, Rina. I am going to deal with the zombies here, but I am not going to play the hero and say that I will protect those people. I am not even sure if I can protect myself, after all.”
“I suppose that fits your usual behavior and what you said before,” Rina said. “That being said, you won’t be able to carry many things by yourself if you try to fight at the same time.”
“What a goody-two-shoes idiot…” Shalia said.
Luke decided to keep moving because they only shut up when he was fighting. The other zombies finally noticed Luke’s presence, but he made sure to use the shelves well and forced them to come one at a time. After killing fifteen more of those, Luke leveled up and reached the middle waypoint of level four. At the same time, he also gained a new weapon.
Short ax
A heavy weapon that can also be used by throwing. It also has a high durability.
STR + 03
Durability: 15/15
“I’d better store away the short sword and use this since the durability has reached a low level, and I would better break it by using Weapon Augmentation,” Luke said.
“You should test what the new level of that skill could do as well, Luke,” Rina said. “That type of skill always changes drastically when it levels up..”
“I thought you guys were supposed to know everything… why don’t you know what the skill can do at level two?” Luke frowned.
“Information is power, I saw someone using that type of skill once, but I didn’t have the chance to see its TRUE potential,” Rina replied.
“So incompetent…” Shalia said.
“If you… ah, forget it,” Rina said and then sighed.
Luke began to look around the supermarket, and he quickly found in the kitchen section many boxes with numerous collections of knives. That was a pretty scary sight given how Luke was planning to use them… Nevertheless, he unboxed those and then filled his bag with dozens of them. As crazy as that sounded, there was an even higher number of knives behind. Luke really should use the supermarket as a base, but…
Suddenly, the ground began to tremble a little. It had to be at the moment Luke thought of that massive beast… he finally realized that he had made a certain mistake. Luke tried to ignore the smell to keep on fighting, but the smell of death was so powerful that it wouldn’t be surprising if some monsters were attracted by it…
In any case, Luke prepared himself to fight while holding the sword in one hand and the ax in the other. Fuck the ax and its durability. If that thing approaches, Luke will use Weapon Augmentation on that as well.
You obtained a new quest: kill the Cursed Dark Beast.
Reward: random skill book
The trembling got more intense and more frequent, and then Luke’s fears were confirmed. A massive hairy, dark beast that seemed like an oversized dog showed up and invaded the supermarket. It looked around in search of Luke, but the first thing that creature found was a sword rotating in the air like a boomerang toward its eyes. Despite its size, the weird beast was pretty fast and jumped to the size, but in the end, the sword still cut the left eye of the creature.
“HHHHHHUUUUUURRGGGHHHH,” The creature grunted in pain while looking viciously at Luke.
