Chapter 122: Breakthrough (2)
Chapter 122: Breakthrough (2)
Jason groaned when he heard he would be the only one going through the boxes' contents. 'Please tell me this is some sick joke of his!' However, when Jason turned to glance at Sentinel, he could tell from his mentor's expression he was screwed. 'He's serious'
Jason heaved a sigh as he tried guessing how much time it would take. 'There's no way he can expect this to be done in one sitting. It would take months to go through all of this.' He squinted at Sentinel while he chose his next words carefully.
"I can't possibly get through this in a short amount of time. So, what's the plan? Are we taking some stuff back to Bridgend or do we need to come here every so often?" Jason said each word slowly while studying Sentinel's reaction.
"Hm, we can take some stuff back. But, there're things in the other rooms we passed by that may be connected to these documents. So we'll be spending a lot of time down here." Sentinel rubbed his chin while he looked around. "I'll mainly try to crack the computers upstairs. So we'll be living here for a while."
"Does that mean I won't have any training?" Jason raised an eyebrow at Sentinel's answer. He wanted to check up on Dani and Adam's condition.
"No," Sentinel sighed. "It'll take some time for the cadets to return to fighting condition. We'll use their recovery time to sift through everything here. But, that doesn't mean you won't have any training at all."
Jason felt an icy chill creep down his spine when he saw the look that Sentinel was giving him. It gave him a horrible feeling. 'I better not ask anything more about. Unless I want him to show me what it is right away.' Jason stopped that conversation right there.
"So, can you at least tell me where to start with this?" Jason pointed towards the boxes with a helpless expression.
"Hm" Sentinel seemed to scan his memories before his cybernetic eye flashed. "The boxes on the left side by the door. They may have information about the early experiments for fusing beast DNA with humans."
Jason frowned when he heard that. 'There're other things stored here, but he went straight for that. He's definitely planning on reviving this procedure from the Old World.' Jason shook his head. Although the procedure was interesting, and he would like to see the results. However, he felt it was a bad idea.
A lot of individuals already held an unimaginable amount of power. This would only upset the delicate balance further. 'Are they hoping it can allow them to force the Alliance to back off? Or do they want to conquer them?' Jason thought back to the things that Sentinel had told him. He felt that his second guess was probably correct.
'Damn. If I crack the information here, they'll lock me away as a research rat. Only bringing me out when they find new Nests. There would be no need for any Pillars if everyone in the Empire is overpowered.' Jason felt like he could see the true intentions of the Emperor, even though they had never met.
Jason decided to stop wasting time under Sentinel's glare. He picked up the first box that Sentinel had suggested. He grunted as he carried it over to the desk and chair before sitting down to sort through it. Sentinel nodded with satisfaction when he saw Jason was ready to get to work.

"I'll come get you later and show you to the living areas. There's a kitchen around the corner back there so you won't starve or die of thirst." Sentinel pointed to the boxes in the back before turning to leave.
Jason raised an eyebrow as he glanced towards the back of the room. 'A corner? Hell, I can't even see it! Does that mean there's more of these boxes hidden away?' He massaged his temples as a deep frown crossed his face. 'This will actually be the death of me!'
He sat unmoving for ten minutes, just staring at the box in front of him with a deadpan expression. 'I should probably start.' Jason took the first few layers of paper out from inside and sat them in front of himself. His eyes scanned the first lines.
"A Comprehensive Report On 'Herjella' Fish, by Dr Simon Brown." Jason hummed as he read the cover page. 'Is this whole box dedicated to one thing?'
"Do you want me to help?" Syssie gave him a sympathetic look while she strolled around the room.
"Help? How?" Jason frowned as he glanced at the usually silent AI. Any help right now would be appreciated.
"Hm, while you read one thing, I can scan others as long as they're in your line of sight. Then I can store the details to my Memory banks for swift reference later on." Syssie sounded quite happy to be able to help for once.
Jason tapped his chin for a moment as he narrowed his eyes. "Won't that effect my Power?"
"No" Syssie shook her head and her long blonde hair flowed over her shoulders. "My memory and what your brain can store are different. I would allocate this stuff room amongst the files you created for your projects. There's plenty of space left in there."
Jason slammed his palm on the table. "You're hired! Hopefully, we can get through all of this faster than what he expects we can. If we play dumb, we might be able to use the findings for ourselves without them ever knowing!"
"So what? You're planning on making an enemy of the Empire? For some old research?" Syssie chuckled with a glint in her eyes.
"No For my freedom! Besides, I'm already their enemy. They just haven't realised it yet. But, at some point, someone is going to figure I was the Black Arrow. When that happens, they'll definitely lock me away." Jason scratched his chin as he had a faraway look in his eyes. "They wouldn't kill me, not now. But being locked in a cell deciphering stuff like this every day? That would be worse than death."
