Utopian System

Chapter 237: Chapter 237: System's Multiplayer Challenge - 6

The blue crystal pulsed with an otherworldly glow, casting eerie shadows across the five challengers' faces.

Hearts pounding, they exchanged silent glances.

With a collective deep breath, they reached out and touched the smooth, cool surface.

In an instant, reality warped around them. The familiar sensation of displacement washed over their bodies, a dizzying whirl of light and darkness. When the world solidified again, they found themselves in the third level of the challenge.

The cavern materialized before them, its layout hauntingly familiar. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like jagged teeth, their crystalline surfaces glinting in the dim light. The air was thick with anticipation, carrying the faint scent of something... alien.

"Look!" one of them whispered, pointing at a shimmering object hovering nearby.

It was another emblem, different from the one they had acquired earlier. This new artifact pulsed with a mysterious energy, its surface etched with intricate symbols that seemed to shift and change as they watched.

"The Emblem of Life," someone murmured, voice filled with awe as he read.

The appearance of this new power sparked an intense but brief discussion among the group. Voices overlapped, urgent and low:

"Who should carry it?" "How can we best use it?"

The bearer of the first emblem cleared his throat. "We should choose at random," he suggested, breaking the tense silence. "Everyone should have an equal chance. It's the fairest way."

The others nodded, recognizing the wisdom in this proposal. They decided to use a simple game to determine the bearer. Each would choose a number from 1 to 3 with their fingers simultaneously, and whoever had the different number from the rest would win.

They formed a circle, tension palpable in the air. "On the count of three," one said. "One... two... three!"

Fingers shot up, and for a moment, all was still as they processed the result. One of them had chosen a different number from the rest.

The winner stepped forward, excitement and nervousness warring on their face. As they grasped the Emblem of Life, a surge of energy coursed through their body. Muscles tensed, skin tingled, and a gasp escaped their lips.

"How does it feel?" one of the others asked, curiosity evident in his voice.

"Strange," the new emblem bearer replied, flexing his muscles experimentally. "I feel... tougher, somehow. Like I could withstand more."

The group quickly agreed that while this emblem didn't seem as immediately useful to everyone as the Emblem of Power, it was far better than having nothing. The added durability could prove crucial in the heat of battle.

With the emblems assigned, the group advanced through the familiar tunnel. The sound of their footsteps echoed ominously, each step bringing them closer to the unknown dangers that lay ahead.

As they emerged into a wider área...

There, waiting for them as in previous levels, stood one hundred Locus.

These were different again.

More intimidating than any they had faced before.

The monsters loomed larger, their bodies covered with more black markings that pulsed with sinister energy.

The group exchanged worried glances.

How many attacks would it take to bring down these enhanced monstrosities? Twelve? Or, being optimistic, perhaps nine?

Regardless of the exact number, the group was ready. They had learned from their previous mistakes.

Retreating into the tunnel was not a good idea; it was better to stay in the wide area.

If they could circle around the open space, it would be more efficient to use combos quickly to eliminate the monsters in larger sections.

To implement this strategy, they designated one of their own to focus on constructing carbon walls, controlling the flow of the Locus. With the plan agreed upon, they launched into action.

The bearer of the Emblem of Power led the charge, their strikes now counting as two impacts thanks to the artifact. As the Locus sprang to life, the plan was set in motion. The wall-builder began erecting barriers, channeling the monsters so the group could move without being surrounded.

At first, the one in charge of the walls almost compromised their escape.

"I can't hold them!" he shouted, panic edging into his voice.

The Locus pressed against the hastily erected barriers, claws scraping and gouging the carbon surface.

But one of his companions reacted quickly, reinforcing the defense with an extra wall. This timely collaboration allowed them to reposition the monsters, even managing at one point to hit half of them with their combos.

To their relief and surprise, the Locus began to fall after only nine attacks.

The efficiency of their strategy was bearing fruit too.

As the battle progressed, the group moved as a well-oiled unit. The Emblem of Power bearer launched devastating attacks that counted for two. The other three alternated between attacks and support, keeping the monsters at bay and securing the perimeter.

"Keep going!" the emblem of power bearer shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "We can do this!"

The air crackled with energy as combo after combo was launched. The cavern lit up with the fury of their attacks, a dazzling display of power and coordination.

The Locus fell one by one, their death throes a cacophony of inhuman screeches and thuds.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of combat, the last Locus fell. The group stood panting, barely able to believe their success.

Miraculously, they had used just over 120 mana points to win, even less than in the previous level, despite the increase in difficulty.

"We... we did it," one of them said, his voice filled with disbelief and joy.

"And more efficiently than before," added another, a note of pride in his voice.

As they caught their breath, they began collecting the cores left by the fallen Locus. To their surprise and delight, they discovered that each core now had a value of 100 points.

"Ten thousand points," murmured the Emblem of Power bearer, calculating quickly. "It's still not much for us, but..."

"But the increase is promising," finished the strategist, his eyes glinting with excitement.

The others nodded, recognizing the promise this increase represented. If the trend continued, the higher levels could offer truly substantial rewards.

With this victory under their belt and the prospect of even greater rewards ahead, the decision to continue to the fourth level was almost instantaneous. Success had given them confidence, and curiosity about what awaited them further on outweighed any residual fear.

As they touched the crystal simultaneously, ready to face whatever challenge awaited them next, they couldn't help but feel a sense of growing confidence. They had faced seemingly impossible odds and emerged victorious.

They had learned, adapted, and overcome.

The crystal pulsed with energy, ready to transport them to the next level. As the familiar sensation of displacement washed over them, each member of the group silently steeled themselves for what was to come.

Level 4.
