Chapter 37: Duel Disk Beta Tester! What a Privilege!
Chapter 37: Duel Disk Beta Tester! What a Privilege!
Three Days Later...
[3rd POV]
In the Domino City High classroom, Yuna was fidgeting awkwardly. She recalled falling asleep inside the Game Pod and waking up with Seto's trench coat covering her body. What's worse was when Yuna woke up, she found herself drooling on the expensive coat!
Too embarrassed to return the dirty coat, Yuna eventually took the coat home to wash it, planning to give clothing to Seto the next time they meet. However, Seto have not been at school for the past few days, and Yuna wasn't ready to enter the Kaiba Corps building and request to see their young president or ask Mokuba for a favour.
Sighing with exhaustion, Yuna gently rubbed her temples. Amidst the moment, she heard multiple girls screaming and cheering in the other classrooms as her annoyance grew. Noticing the noise, the female students from her class explored the sound and contributed to the commotion when they found the source.
Yuna knew exactly why they were acting this way and reminiscent of an arc that should be happening now. The voices of fawning girls became louder as the door to her classroom opened.
A young man dressed in the normal Domino High uniform entered. He had spiky hair held up by a red bandana, green eyes, sharp features, and a handsome face. The man in question was Duke Devlin. Recently, he opened a new game shop in Domino City and became a student at this school.
However, opening a game shop was merely an excuse to hide his true goals. His enrolment was because he was curious about a certain individual known as the Duel King. It all started a year ago when Duek developed a new game called Dungeon Dice Monsters.
After finally gaining the chance to discuss his ideas with Maximillian Pegasus, the creator of the Duel Monsters game, wishing for him to invest in Duke's idea, however, the interview went in a different direction than he expected.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
Throughout the conversation, Pegasus had been praising the Duel King non-stop; even if the topic weren't related to Duel Monsters, he would find a way. Thankfully, Duke successfully gained Pegasus's support, only on the condition of adding a monster into his game called the Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand...
Intrigued by Pegasus's obsession, Duke decided to investigate the Duel King. So it wasn't strange when he was shocked that the famous duelist was a girl in Domino High.
So naturally, Duke enrolled in the school, hoping to find that person. His charisma and handsome appearance attracted many female students like a herder guiding a flock of sheep. But, no matter how many girls he met, none matched the description he sought.
Eventually, when Duke entered the last classroom, he found her. He held his breath and stared at the beautiful girl sitting in the corner of the room; compared to all the ones he saw, they were nothing.
Duke felt his heart beat quickly as her majestic appearance attracted him. Was this love at first sight? Instinctively, he walked towards her. Hearing footsteps approached her direction. Yuna raised her head and stared at the young man standing before her.
"Good morning. I hope I'm not intruding?" Duke smiled charmingly, causing the nearby female students to squeal.
However, Yuna didn't react and blankly gazed into his eyes. The lack of response caught Duke off guard, but his emotions were hidden with a chuckle: "To think there was such a majestic flower in this plain grassy field, may I have the honour of learning your name."
With a flick of his wrist, a luscious blue rose appeared between his finger, and he offered the flower to Yuna. She gazed at the flower, and her pupils flickered as Duke was happy that he managed to get a reaction. But unbeknownst to him, instead of feeling interested towards Duke, Yuna was wondering where the blue rose came from in the first place.
Realising that Duke was waiting for an answer, Yuna anxiously averted her gaze: "Y... Yuna... Sano.."
Duke was enchanted by her voice. He gently grasped Yuna's hand and planted his lips on her palm: "Yuna Sano, what a gorgeous name."
There was silence in the room as people were shocked by what Duke had done. Yuna stared at the hand where he had kissed her, and her brain seemed to malfunction.
*BAM*
Suddenly, the door to the classroom was kicked open, and a tall figure entered. He wore a neat black shirt, pants, and a white sleeveless coat with the Kaiba Corps Logo embroidered on his collar.
Without hesitation, he approached Yuna and crossed his arms. Yuna's eyes widened: "K... kaiba..."
"Come with me," Seto ordered.
He turned his head and saw Duke holding Yuna's hand. Seto sneered: "Get out of my way. I have business with her."
Duke gritted his teeth and reluctantly backed off. Even if he was rich, he knew not to mess with the ferocious Seto Kaiba, who could easily dispose of him without the authorities questioning anything.
Yuna stood up and followed Seto out of the room. They passed by countless classmates, and she sighed bitterly when she heard the nonsensical rumours sprouting from this interaction...
[Yuna's POV]
Ehhh, how did I get here...
After Kaiba bailed me out of school, I was taken to Kaiba Corps and brought to his private office. None of us spoke a single word throughout the journey, and I felt myself slowly suffocating from the silence.
Now, even when I'm in his office, he hasn't done anything but stares, particularly at my right hand. Finally, Kaiba removed a few documents from his drawer and slid them across the table.
I picked up the papers, and words were written in large fonts that caught my attention.
'Battle City Rules...' I read in my head, and I felt myself getting excited.
Battle City! Finally, it's here!!!!
This was probably the most famous Yugioh arc ever, and the duels were amazing! However, what excites me the most was the rare cards I can get! I eagerly flipped through the documents and began to look at each rule Kaiba set enthusiastically. The rules were fairly normal, while some weren't particularly noteworthy, but there were some rules that I took an
interest in.
#Rule 3: Players begin with 4000 Life Points.
#Rule 12: Players can only have up to 6 cards in their hand unless the card: "Infinite Cards" is
in play on their side of the field.
#Rule 25: When a Fusion Monster is Tributed, that monster is counted as several monsters equal to the number of Fusion Material Monsters used.
#Rule 27: Fusion Monsters must wait one turn after they are Summoned before they can attack, though the "Quick Attack" card can be used to circumvent this.
#Rule 40: A monster that becomes an Equip Card is treated as both a monster and an Equip
Card.
When I finished reading, I set the paper down, and Kaiba was waiting for me while crossing his arms: "I want to hear your opinion on this."
"It's good..." I answered honestly.
Kaiba has written the rules and details so meticulously that I couldn't find any loopholes that can be exploited. Satisfied with my answer, Kaiba stood up and gazed out the window. "This will be a new era of Duel Monsters," Kaiba declared with pride: "This tournament will be bigger than Duelist Kingdom and forever imprint itself on the world." Kaiba spread his arms and laughed like a maniac. If you add a thunderstorm and eerie music in the background, you will have a villain in the making! After laughing for a few minutes, he eventually composed himself and faced me.
"However, there are still some things that need to be finalised," Kaiba said: "Follow me."
He led me down the elevator and back down to the basement levels of the corporal buildings. We walked quietly through the hallway until we arrived at an underground bunker. There was an observation window on the side, and I noticed countless researchers working diligently. I saw Mokuba leading the team as he ordered the scientists, who were frantically running around like headless chickens. When Mokuba noticed me, he smiled and waved.
Before I could inquire further, Seto approached a control panel beside us. He typed on the keyboards, and the machine dispensed two devices I'm familiar with.
"These are the new Prototype Duel Disks I have created." Kaiba explained and handed a duel disk to me: "Put this on."
I equipped the duel disk on my wrist with Mokuba's instruction through the speakers. After successfully putting on the equipment, I raised it in the air.
The duel disk resembled an arm blade with a large tray attached to the side of the device. On
the tray, multiple slots indicated where to place my monsters were sketched and below the monster slots were thin slits to insert my spell and traps. Like the duel disk from Legendary Heroes, the Disk's centre includes the Deck and Graveyard slot and Life Point counter. There were tiny wheels in the graveyard slot, and like a vacuum, it seemed to suck up the cards I discarded. Finally, there were buttons at the back that allowed me to search for cards in my
graveyard.
"Have you finished?" Seto asked. I nodded, and we each went to the opposite side of the
room.
"I want you here to test this device and duel with the Battle City rules." Kaiba explained: "The profound duelling artificial intelligence I created no longer satisfies me, and you will suffice."
Kaiba also said that since this was only a test, we won't place our rarest cards as wagers. I might be overthinking this, but maybe he was still traumatised when I almost took his beloved Blue Eyes White Dragon?
"Are you two ready?" Mokuba asked.
"Yes." We said in unison as our duel disks activated: "Duel!"
[Yuna Sano: 4000 LP]
[Seto Kaib: 4000 LP]
"I will go first!" Kaiba declared: "I will summon Vorse Raider in attack position!"
Kaiba placed a card on his duel disk, and a tall monster appeared before him. The monster looked human except for his demonic features. In his hand was a double-bladed sword, which The wielded like a certain character from a space movie.
[Vorse Raider: 1900 Attack, 1200 Defence]
"Then I will set two cards and end my turn!" He declared as two cards manifested by his feet.
If I recall, Kaiba's deck has a massive change compared to the duelist kingdom, and he now
has stronger cards. However, just like Kaiba, I have also changed, so I will not be looked down
upon!
"I will summon Starliege Seyfert from my hand!" I yelled.
A small celestial dragon, the size of Mokuba, was summoned onto the field. Its body consists
of multiple golden and obsidian plates that orbit around a sphere, creating a shape of a
creature.
[Starliege Seyfert: 1800 Attack, o Defence]
"With Starliege Seyfert's ability, I will send my Keeper of the Shrine and itself to the
graveyard, allowing me to add one dragon monster whose level is equal to the total level of all the monsters sent to the graveyard through this effect!"
I showed Kaiba the card I had received, the Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, and added it to my
hand: "Then, with Keeper of the Shrine's effect, I can special summon itself onto the field in
defence position."
[Keeper of the Shrine: 0 Attack, 2100 Defence]
"Then I will set a card and end my turn," I said.
"Draw!" Kaiba shouted: "I will activate Enemy Controller (anime). I can destroy your Keeper
of the Shrine by paying one thousand life points!"
A controller appeared in Kaiba's hand, and after inputting a specific set of controls, the
Keeper of the Shrine exploded, leaving my field empty except for a card.
[Seto Kaiba: 4000 LP -> 3000 LP]
"Then I summon Battle Ox!" Kaiba announced as a minotaur wielding a battle axe arrived on
the board.
[Battle Ox: 1700 Attack, 1100 Defence]
"Now, Vorse Raider and Battle Ox, attack!"
As the two monsters rushed towards me, I instantly activated my trap card: "I use Negate
Attack to stop your Vorse Raider and end the battle phase entirely!"
Before the monsters can reach me, they immediately retreated. Kaiba clicked his teeth in
annoyance, and he passed his turn.
"I will summon Dragon Knight of Creation and then attack Battle Ox!"
[Dragon Knight of Creation: 1800 Attack, 600 Defence]
My knight charged and swung its sword. However, the sharp blade never came in contact with
the monster's body, and Battle Ox disappeared. Kaiba crossed his arms as one of the set cards revealed itself.
"I will activate Interdimensional Matter Transporter and banish Battle Ox until this End
Phase," Kaiba explained: "I have seen what that monster is capable of, and I won't let you accomplish your plan."
I smiled at Kaiba's proactive remarks: "That's only the first effect of Dragon Knight of
Creation!" I declared: "Using his second ability, I will discard one card and then send Dragon
Knight of Creation to the graveyard. I can revive one Level Seven or Eight Dragon monster, rise Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand!"
A magic-like circle appeared on the ground, and a golden dragon emerged. The dragon roared ferociously, and Kaiba scowled as he glared at the monster calculatingly.
[Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand: 2800 Attack, 2800 Defence]
"Using Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand's ability, I will banish your Vorse Raider, and it will gain
four hundred attacks and defence!"
[Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand: 2800 -> 3200 Attack, 2800 -> 3200 Defence]
"I will end my turn here," I declared.
Unfortunately, I couldn't attack as I had already used m Battle Phase. However, the sheer
presence of Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand placed a lot of pressure on the board, hinting that
unless he did something major, I could ultimately defeat him.
As I ended my turn, Battle Ox returned to the field, and the monster seemed nervous,
confronting Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand.
[Battle Ox: 1700 Attack, 1100 Defence]
He closed his eyes before reopening them in a few seconds: "Yuna Sano, I admit that you're a
duelist matching my level, but I won't be defeated by the same strategy again!"
Kaiba stared at his hand and smirked: "I will first activate Spell Sanctuary. We each add one
spell from our deck to our hand."
I watched warily as we both added a spell card into our hands. "Also, while Spell Sanctuary is
on the field, we can activate spells in our opponent's turns." Kaiba presented me with the spell card he had added earlier: "Then I will use Shrink, I can
target one monster on the field and half its attack, and the one I choose is my own Battle Ox!"
Battle Ox's size shrunk from a giant, intimidating warrior to a small cute cow holding a tiny
axe.
[Battle Ox: 1700 -> 850 Attack, 1100 Defence] "Now, Battle Ox, attack Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand!"
I was shocked as the small Battle Ox charged without fear. It struck Divine Dragon Lord
Felgrand's ankles, but the dragon easily punted the monster like a football.
[Seto Kaiba: 3000 LP -> 650 LP]
"Finally, the conditions have been met!" He announced: "I will activate my trap card, Crush
Card Virus when one of my dark monsters with one thousand fewer attacks is destroyed by battle. Then all of your monsters on the field, hand or deck that have one thousand-five hundred attacks will be destroyed, and all monsters that were destroyed can't be special
summoned from the graveyard!"
Ah, crap...
Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand collapsed in exhaustion as if infected by some disease, and it
gasped for breath until the dragon finally perished. Many of my cards followed my dragon as I dumped half of my deck into the discards. "Now, I will summon Kaiser Sea Horse!" He declared.
An armoured warrior wielding a shield and spear was summoned onto the field. The monster
howled and spun its spear before pointing the weapon at me.
[Kaiser Sea Horse: 1700 Attack, 1650 Defence]
"Kaiser Sea Horse, attack!" Kaiba ordered, and the monster rushed towards me. The monster stabbed with its spear, and I felt the shock of taking damage. I slightly stumbled
and breathed deeply. What the hell was that? I never knew that duel disk could do something
like
this...
[Yuna Sano: 4000 LP -> 2300 LP]
I may also be slightly paranoid, but when Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand was defeated, I felt
my stamina disappearing. It was probably because of standing too long, and my leg muscles were tired, but knowing the history of Duel Monsters, I was slightly nervous.
"So what will you do now?" Kaiba asked.
"At this moment, the Keeper of the Shrine will be summoned from the graveyard. Since it was
already resting in the grave, your Crush Card Virus won't affect it..."
[Keeper of the Shrine: 0 Attack, 2100 Defence] "Then I will use Pot of Greed to draw two cards from my deck."
Since my monsters were in the discard pile and I couldn't summon them from the graveyard, I
have to find a way to get them back!
Kaiba smirked and drew a card; glancing at his hand, the smile on his face widened: "This may
be as far as you will go! While Kaiser Sea Horse is on the field, it can act as two tributes! With
this, I can summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon!"
I watched the intimidating dragon appear on the field. Using Blue Eyes White Dragon for a
while now, and it felt uncomfortable seeing Blue Eyes White Dragon being used against me. [Blue Eyes White Dragon: 3000 Attack, 2500 Defence]
Kaiba: "Blue Eyes White Dragon, attack, Burst Stream of Destruction!" The dragon unleashed a flaming white breath that completely annihilated my Keeper of the
Shrine. I gritted my teeth; seriously, what's the mechanics behind this design? I understand if it was to increase the immersion, but still...
"I will use Monster Reborn and summon Keeper of the Shrine in defence position," I said,
trying to hide my anxiousness: "I end my turn." [Keeper of the Shrine: 0 Attack, 2100 Defence]
"It's over now!" Kaiba laughed: "I will summon Blade Knight!"
[Blade Knight: 1600 Attack, 1100 Defence]
"Blue Eyes White Dragon and Blade Knight, attack!" He shouted, and the two monsters
charged.
Blue Eyes White Dragon fired a white beam and instantly destroyed Keeper of the Shrine.
Using this gap, Blade Knight swung its sword. It was only for a moment, but I felt myself getting cut...
[Yuna Sano: 2300 LP -> 700 LP]
I staggered weakly and coughed. What in the world was that? I touched my chest, where I
sensed the sensation of being slashed. I gulped nervously, thinking a large wound would
burst open any second from now.
"I will set two cards face down, then end my turn," Kaiba said and glanced at me.
"Then, I summon Guardian of Felgrand!"
On my field appeared a large bulky warrior with green hair. As he appeared, I stared at
Guardian of Felgrand with relief. This was probably the first time I was so glad to see this common card.
[Guardian of Felgrand: 500 Attack, 500 Defence]
"With Guardian of Felgrand's effect, I can equip Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand to this card!" I
said: "Then, Guardian of Felgrand will gain attack and defence equal to half of Divine Dragon
Lord Felgrand's attack!"
[Guardian of Felgrand: 500 -> 1900 Attack, 500 -> 1900 Defence]
"Then I will use Guardian of Felgrand's effect to send himself and Divine Dragon Lord
Felgrand to the graveyard!"
Normally, I couldn't do something like this and needed the help of the Ruins of the Divine Dragon Lord. However, with the new Battle City rules, it's different now. "Since Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand has returned to the graveyard, it's no longer bounded by
Crush Card Virus's effect, so return to me, Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand!"
A ray of light burst forth, blinding the room. The golden dragon returned, and this time it was
angrier than ever.
[Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand: 2800 Attack, 2800 Defence]
"Kuh..." I groaned, and my legs gave out...
I felt myself sweating profusely as if I just finished a twenty-kilometre marathon. Why was
this happening to me? What's wrong with my body? I glanced at Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand. Despite being a hologram, I could feel the concern directed towards me. "Big Sister, what's wrong?" Mokuba asked worriedly from the intercoms.
I clenched my fist: "My legs were a little tired of standing too long..."
"I think we have enough data now," Mokuba said shakily: "Let's end the duel here."
"NO!" Kaiba and I shouted simultaneously.
Surrendering to Kaiba? I thought and glanced at the confident man across the room. You must
be joking! Gathering enough strength, I stood back up and growled: "Let's continue!"
Hearing this, Kaiba smiled: "Good, that's what I expected of you!"
"I will use Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand's effect to banish your Blue Eyes White Dragon!" I
shouted.
Like a replay from the past, Blue Eyes White Dragon was ultimately banished, and Divine
Dragon Lord Felgrand strengthened.
[Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand: 2800 -> 3600 Attack, 2800 -> 3600 Defence] "Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand," I shouted: "Attack Blade Knight!" "That I won't let you, I will use Waboku and my monsters won't be destroyed by battle or take
any damage," Kaiba explained.
I scowled as my monster's attack failed: "It's your turn..."
Sensing my frustration, Kaiba smirked: "I will first activate my trap card. Return from the
Different Dimension, and by paying half of my life points, I can special summon as many monsters that were banished onto my field."
[Seto Kaiba: 650 LP -> 325 LP]
To my unwillingness, Vorse Raider and Blue Eyes White Dragon were revived...
[Blue Eyes White Dragon: 3000 Attack, 2500 Defence]
[Vorse Raider: 1900 Attack, 1200 Defence]
Was Kaiba going to summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon now? Strangely, I wasn't so sure if it
was correct.
Vorse Raider
Blade Knight
Blue Eyes White Dragon
Three monsters...
I counted and gasped.
No way...
"With this, the conditions have been met!" Kaiba shouted eagerly: "I will tribute these three monsters. Rise from your slumber and serve me. I call upon you. Obelisk the Tormentor!!!" The room's lights flickered wildly, and the walls trembled. Cracks ran along the glass, and our duel disks were alarmingly blaring. A massive blue-skinned humanoid appeared. It has wings were as large as the monster's body growing from its back, and its body was covered in spikes.
I stared at the creature and shivered in fear... [Obelisk the Tormentor: 4000 Attack, 4000 Defence]
A... A god...
If it were in the modern world, I would have laughed it off, but now, things were entirely
different in the world of Yugioh. My body shook uncontrollably, and I sensed its eyes staring
into my soul.
"This is my true power!" Kaiba cackled: "Now Obelisk the Tormentor, attack!!" Obelisk's massive body moved as it cocked its fist. Instantly, it swung its fists towards Divine
Dragon Lord Felgrand, and the dragon shattered into pieces.
[Yuna Sano: 700 LP -> 300 LP]
The force sent me stumbling backward. My drenched back hit the wall, and I gasped for
breath. To think a god card will appear here...
Despite the major disadvantage, I grinned and couldn't hide my enthusiasm. Obelisk the Tormentor in the flesh! I was curious to see Kaiba's reactions towards my tenancy, and he was staring at me with shock, but soon I realised that his surprise was directed at something else...
I felt a warm liquid trickling down my lips, and I frowned as its red colour dirtied my duel
disk. My mind was still in a state of adrenaline, so it took me a few seconds to understand my
situation.
Suddenly, feeling the urge to cough, I blocked my mouth and a splatter of blood leaked
through the gaps between my finger.
'Ah...' I thought and gazed at the blood dripping down my hand, and then everything went
dark...
I hope you enjoy!
