Chapter 272: Acid Rain (1)
Chapter 272: Acid Rain (1)
The little boy then continued in a hoarse voice, "They injected something into my eldest brother and took him away. My elder sister hid me in the storage room before they also took her. In the end, they caught all my siblings."
Finishing his story, the boy could no longer hold back his tears and began crying silently.
Watching him wipe his tears with the thin blanket, Yao Ran sighed. She reached into her space and took out a few pieces of milk candy.
She placed them in the boy's small hand and asked, "Do you remember anything else about those men?"
The boy held the milk candies tightly, thought for a moment, and said, "They all had shiny black coins pinned to their clothes."
Hearing this, Yao Ran and Long Yu exchanged a glance, speaking in unison, "The Ark."
The boy looked up at Yao Ran, his eyes filled with tears, and asked, "Elder Sister, can you save my siblings?"n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Yao Ran's heart sank when she heard the boy's question.
If The Ark was responsible for the kidnapping, rescuing the children would be nearly impossible. Without any information about The Ark, she didn't even know where to start. Realizing the boy was still staring at her, Yao Ran reached out and gently patted his head.
She smiled and said, "You are still injured and need to rest. Once you've recovered, we will find a way to save your siblings."
She refrained from making any promises about bringing them back alive, knowing how slim the chances were. Still, she will try to do her best to find and rescue them so they won't experience the same hell she had in her past life.
Hearing her words, the boy nodded and obediently lay back on the bed.
Yao Ran tucked the thin blanket around him and said, "If you need anything, just call someone."
The boy nodded again and closed his eyes. Yao Ran refilled the ice and water in the portable air conditioner before leaving the room with Long Yu.
After the conversation with the boy, Yao Ran and the others focused on searching for clues but found nothing. Time flew by as they settled in Shan Wu Resort and took care of the boy, and in the blink of an eye, two months had passed.
When Yao Ran woke up today, she looked at the sky and was surprised to see it covered by thick cumulonimbus clouds. She walked to the balcony, took out her binoculars, and observed the dark clouds.
As she watched lightning flickering within them, Yao Ran's grip on the binoculars tightened. The extreme heat had only begun six months ago, and there were still six months to go. The sudden appearance of these clouds filled Yao Ran with bad feelings. She put away her binoculars and hurried downstairs.
Noticing the elderly tending to the vegetables and potatoes in the garden, she called out, "Grandpas, Grandmas, thunderclouds are coming. You should head inside."
Grandpa Quan looked up when he heard that and said, "We will go in after watering the crops."
"Please hurry," she urged. "The wind is getting stronger."
Grandpa Quan nodded and smiled reassuringly, "Alright."
After warning them, Yao Ran anxiously glanced at the rapidly darkening sky. After a brief moment of hesitation, she turned and went to find Long Yu.
At the end of the world, sudden weather changes often signal impending natural disasters. Based on her past life experiences, Yao Ran knew these cumulonimbus clouds were likely far from ordinary.
When she arrived in the living room and found it empty, she headed to the kitchen. There, she saw Mother Han and Mother Sima busily preparing food.
"Auntie Han, Auntie Sima, have you seen A Yu?" she asked.
Mother Sima paused her work, turned to Yao Ran, and replied, "Captain and the others are moving supplies to the underground cellar."
"Did A Yu tell you to prepare this much food?" Yao Ran asked again.
Mother Han nodded and replied with a hint of worry in her voice, "Captain said thunderstorms are coming, and this villa isn't designed to withstand them. He told us to make more dried food in case we have to stay in the cellar for a while."
Hearing this, Yao Ran's heart sank. It seemed Long Yu shared her premonition.
Not wanting to disturb them further, Yao Ran left to find Long Yu. The underground cellar, located in the front yard, served as both a storage room and a shelter during severe storms. When she reached the front yard, Long Yu saw her and walked over to her. Noticing her worried expression, he said, "Ran Ran, get ready. We will need to stay in the cellar for at least a month."
His precise time frame made it clear he knew what was coming. She held his hand and asked, "A Yu, do you know what kind of natural disaster it is this time?"
Long Yu nodded solemnly and replied, "It's acid rain."
At his words, Yao Ran's expression changed. If these thunderclouds bring acid rain, the soil will be ruined for decades, making it impossible to grow crops. Without a way to produce food, it will be more difficult for survivors to survive.
Letting go of his hand, she said urgently, "I'm going to move the crops."
Without waiting for his response, Yao Ran dashed to the backyard.
Seeing her rush back, Grandma Han asked, "Miss Yao, what's the matter? Why are you in such
a hurry?"
Yao Ran glanced at the dark cumulonimbus clouds and realized time was running out. Grabbing a shovel and an empty planting pot, she began transferring crops while explaining to the others, "A Yu said acid rain is coming. We need to move the crops into pots and take them to the cellar immediately."
Her words momentarily stunned the elderly. As experienced farmers, they knew the devastating implications of acid rain.
Snapping out of his daze, Grandpa Quan shouted, "Hurry! We must save the seedlings!"
