Chapter 267: You Shouldn’t Drink It
Yao Ran nodded and replied, "I went to check on the villa this morning to see how those
children were doing. But when I arrived, I found signs of a fight. The storage room was reduced to ashes, and this child was the only one left there. I searched the villa thoroughly but didn't find any other clues."
She paused, her brow furrowing slightly, and added, "A Yu, I have a bad feeling about this."
Seeing the unease in her eyes, Long Yu held her hand and reassured her, "Don't worry. I will go there later with A Xuan and the others to see if we can find anything."
He then guided her downstairs and said, "Auntie Han and Auntie Sima have prepared lunch. Let's eat first."
Feeling hungry after performing the surgery without breakfast, Yao Ran followed Long Yu downstairs. In the dining room, she saw that the others had just finished their meal.
Noticing her arrival, Shi Xuan asked, "Yao Ran, how is the child?"
Mother Han had already informed the others about the situation while Yao Ran was performing the surgery, so everyone was aware of what happened this morning.
Yao Ran sat in the chair Long Yu had pulled out for her and replied, "His condition has stabilized, but I will need to monitor him for a few days. He lost a lot of blood, and I'm unsure if it will affect his brain. For now, all we can do is wait and hope he wakes up."
Shi Xuan sighed after hearing her explanation, "I hope he recovers soon so we can learn what happened to the other children."
Hearing this, Yao Ran lowered her gaze, lost in thought. Seeing her in a bad mood, Long Yu went to the kitchen and brought her a plate of food.
Placing the food in front of her, he said gently, "Ran Ran, eat first."
"Mhm." Yao Ran snapped out of her thoughts and began eating, though her mind was still preoccupied.
Meanwhile, Wu Lian was so busy that his feet couldn't touch the ground.
After leaving Juncheng City and arriving at the Juncheng Military Base, he lost contact with Long Yu and Yao Ran. As more people sought refuge at the base, they once again faced food and water shortages.
Thanks to the liquid fertilizer he had exchanged with Long Yu and Yao Ran, they managed to plant more potatoes and temporarily solved the food shortage problem. However, while the food shortage was under control, the water crisis remained unsolved.
In his office, Wu Lian's once-handsome face was now haggard and looked pale.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
After scanning a report for a moment, he turned to his assistant and asked, "Is there still no news about Captain Long?"
The assistant shook his head and replied, "Not yet. The last information we received indicated that Captain Long and his team left Juncheng City one day before the mutant rats overran it."
Wu Lian ruffled his hair in frustration and asked, "What about the mutant rats? Has the scout team returned?"
The assistant placed a document in front of him and replied, "Here is the report on that mission."
"Last night, two members of the scouting team returned severely injured. They have been in surgery since then. According to the latest updates, their condition is critical, and the doctors are struggling to save them."
Wu Lian read through the report while listening to his assistant. With each passing moment, his expression grew darker.
A few minutes later, he asked, "Has Commander Xu given any further instructions regarding the mutant rat infestation?"
"Not yet. Commander Xu and the senior officers are still in a meeting, and we are waiting for their decision." The assistant answered with a frown.
Hearing this, Wu Lian leaned back in his chair, rubbed his tired eyes, and sighed.
Commander Xu and the others might need time to formulate a plan, but time was a luxury they couldn't afford at this moment.
Rats reproduce quickly, and mutant rats multiply at an even higher rate. If the infestation isn't controlled as soon as possible, the mutant rats won't just overrun Juncheng City. They will turn the entire Beifeng Province into their territory.
The assistant observed Wu Lian's weary face, hesitated for a moment, and asked, "Captain Wu, should I deploy more personnel to search for Captain Long?"
Wu Lian thought for a moment, opened his eyes, and replied, "No. We are already short- staffed. We can't spare anyone else to look for him."
The assistant thought for a second and said, "Then what about the liquid fertilizer? Professor Qin sent a request this morning. He said he had used it all to produce nutrient solutions. The remaining nutrient solution can only be used for one more harvest."
"He also said that the quality of the soil is getting worse. Without nutrient solutions, it would be difficult for us to produce enough food to feed everyone."
Wu Lian fell silent, torn between the urgent need to locate Long Yu and their lack of human resources. While he was still thinking, a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
He raised his eyes to look at the door and said, "Come in."
A soldier stepped in, saluted, and reported, "Captain Wu, there is a disturbance in the main square."
Wu Lian frowned and said, "Handle the troublemakers as usual."
Noticing the soldier's hesitation, Wu Lian asked, "What's wrong?"
The soldier took out a bottle of water, placed it on Wu Lian's desk, and replied, "The troublemaker claims she can create water. This is what she made before the patrol soldiers detained her."
Wu Lian raised an eyebrow doubtfully when he heard this. Although he doubted the claim, he picked up the bottle and examined its contents.
The water appeared clear and free of impurities. Narrowing his eyes, Wu Lian opened the cap, poured some into his empty cup, and took a sip.
"Captain, you shouldn't drink it!" The assistant and the soldier exclaimed simultaneously when they saw him drink the unknown water.
