Chapter 281: Thunderstorm, Megatsunami (3)
As the rain hit the searing hot ground, it instantly turned into mist, further obscuring the driver's vision.
Despite the harsh conditions, the driver didn't dare to slow down. From time to time, he nervously glanced at the rearview mirror.
Three minutes after the first wave crashed onto the coastline, the second wave struck.
Boom!
With the force brought by the second wave, the water surged inland even faster.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Mu Xichen narrowed his eyes, watching the data update on his screen in real time. A few seconds later, he suddenly said, "Drive faster. The second wave has already hit the coastline." The driver's hands trembled on the wheel. He wanted to cry but had no tears. Just as he was about to explain that the car couldn't go any faster, the ground began to shake violently.
Xu Ruihan's eyes flickered with urgency, and he quickly shouted, "Hold on!"
Hua Shengyang braced himself, stabilizing Mu Xichen's body with one hand while using his long legs to keep steady.
With Hua Shengyang's hand supporting his body, Mu Xichen continued typing furiously on his laptop, and the data on his screen updated at a fast speed.
Five seconds later, the third wave struck, accompanied by another earthquake.
Boom! Crack!
The ground ahead of them suddenly collapsed, splitting open in a massive fissure. The driver's eyes widened in shock, and he instinctively swerved the car to the right, narrowly avoiding the collapse.
"Hold on!" The driver shouted, struggling to keep the car under control.
The second car in the convoy wasn't as fortunate. Unable to stop in time, it plunged directly into the gaping hole.
"Ah!"
"No!"
As the screams echoed through the hole, the drivers of the vehicles behind reacted quickly, avoiding the hole and following the lead car.
Xu Ruihan clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He felt the sting of loss as he witnessed the fate of his subordinates, but there was no time to mourn.
Turning to Mu Xichen, he said firmly, "Xichen, plot a safe route back to the base."
Eyes glued to his laptop screen, Mu Xichen replied, "I'm working on it."
Ten seconds passed like an eternity before he hit the Enter key. After a three-second pause, he said, "Turn right at the next intersection."
The driver spotted the intersection just ahead and made the turn as instructed. With Mu Xichen's navigation, they finally began to put more distance between themselves and the surging seawater behind them.
While Xu Ruihan and his team managed to escape the catastrophic disaster, the same could not be said for the other survivors.
By the time the seawater receded and the thunderstorm diminished, the sea level had risen more than twenty meters-and it continued to rise.
As the long night gave way to dawn and the first rays of sunlight came out from the eastern horizon, an eerie silence shrouded Haicheng Beach and its surrounding areas. Under the bright sun, the once densely populated Haicheng Beach had disappeared-buried beneath the ocean, along with hundreds of thousands of lives.
Back at Haicheng Base, Xu Ruihan, Mu Xichen, and Hua Shengyang hurriedly went to find Grandpa Xu.
The Xu family's butler was stunned to see them arrive covered in dust and sweat. Looking at Xu Ruihan, he asked in shock, "Young Master, you-what happened to you? Are you alright?"
Xu Ruihan had no time to explain.
He pushed open the door to his grandfather's office and said to Zhou Dezhong, "Uncle Zhou, I'm fine. Can you please invite Grandpa Mu, Grandpa Hua, and the senior officers? We will have an emergency meeting in five minutes."
Hearing this, Zhou Dezhong's expression turned serious.
"Yes, Young Master," he replied, leaving immediately to summon the base's senior officers.
Meanwhile, Xu Ruihan and his two childhood friends stepped into Grandpa Xu's office. "Grandpa, we need to leave immediately." Xu Ruihan said, his cold voice tinged with urgency. Xu Boya, engrossed in the romance novel he was reading, looked up at his grandson and frowned, "You brat. What are you talking about?"
Xu Ruihan approached his grandfather and explained, "Grandpa, Haicheng Beach is gone. It sank into the sea after a megatsunami struck the coastline yesterday."
When he heard his grandson's words, Xu Boya's expression changed instantly. He set down his phone and asked in disbelief, "What did you just say? Haicheng Beach is gone?"
Xu Ruihan nodded and signaled Mu Xichen with his eyes. Mu Xichen quickly opened his laptop, typed something, and placed it in front of Xu Boya.
"Grandpa Xu," Mu Xichen explained, "I hacked into a satellite's surveillance feed. You should watch this first."
Xu Boya studied the three young men for a moment before turning his gaze to the laptop screen. As he watched, his face grew paler by the second.
Pointing at the screen, Xu Boya looked at Mu Xichen and asked in disbelief, "This-this happened yesterday?"
Mu Xichen nodded solemnly and replied, "Grandpa Xu, based on the data I have gathered since the megatsunami and thunderstorm hit Haicheng Beach, the sea level is predicted to rise by 200 meters in two days."
"The small-scale earthquakes that happened in Haicheng Beach and its surroundings yesterday were actually aftershocks of the super earthquake that caused the megatsunami. The epicenter of this super earthquake is 20 kilometers away from Haicheng Beach's coastline, with a magnitude of 10.5."
"Due to the super earthquake's destructive force, countless waves merged into a single megatsunami, with the tallest wave reaching 853 meters. A tectonic plate shift triggered this super earthquake, and the shifting might change the land into ocean in the future."
He paused briefly before adding, "I don't have all the data yet, but I'm certain that in less than ten days, Haicheng City will disappear from the map. Our Haicheng Base will also sink into the ocean. We need to evacuate immediately."
Xu Boya listened intently to Mu Xichen's explanation, then turned back to the screen, deep in thought. He remained silent until Zhou Dezhong returned, accompanied by Hua Yangkui, Mu Jieshan, and the base's senior officers.
